Oil light
25 Sep 2015 17:52 - 25 Sep 2015 18:14
Had a weird one today when hole shoting away from my buddy's 103 cu in Harley.
Really jumped his s**t and even he was stunned.
Anyhow my damn oil light came on for about 10-15 seconds after hitting 2nd gear and blasting up to about 7500 rpm
Everything totally normal and I just coasted down with the clutch in and about 1100-1200 rpm idle.
Bikes runs fine and I've only seen this once before when it was much newer and I was at a drag strip.

Is the bike's oil level near the top mark? If not, I wonder if the oil was pushed to the rear of the engine due to the acceleration and momentarily starved the oil pump. I believe they put little "gates" on oil pans of at least some drag KZ bikes to prevent that from happening. Ed

Yes, I think so too... but I thought they fixed that in 1977.
I always ride with the oil level right in between the two hash marks in the clutch cover.... that would be on level ground and the bike straight up and down, not on the side stand.
I'm wondering if I should pull the pan and check something out...?

Oil should fill the window when bike is upright. It's on the center stand that it should be in the middle. Sounds like you're running it low.

It used to happen all the time when I had my oil cooler. What did they do in 77 to fix it?

My Z1 has that. You might want to rework your oil pump like I did mine. Old Kaw Man has lots of them, at least he did.

I bought a 76 kz 900 ltd new in 1976 that I did a lot of drag racing with. It would do that until I installed a gate in the oil pan. I bought the gate from MTC engineering.

I've always wanted to do that. Not too hard or expensive.

Fit a gate.
They all starve the pump on hard acceleration no matter what year the sump pan is .
