The clutch left for vacation today.

When I pull my clutch lever to activate the clutch release bracket (and mechanism inside the front bevel case),the clutch release shaft rotates, but nothing happens with the clutch. I loosened the nut on the tension- adjusting bolt, and the clutch release pulls into the case, and the adjustment bolt can be easily threaded in, meeting no resistance.
I'm wondering if the clutch hub nut worked loose (or came off), or something dumb like that.
Just woke up. Oh bleep, can't go riding today...the perfect day.
Something dumb seems certain...

One multi-task monger is quite enough for me.
You know...the more I think about it, the more I can appreciate your position. However, one gal (at a time) requiring service, is more than enough for me.

This is a bearing type release, with three balls and recesses they drop in, accessible only from the inside. The only way to service is removal of the front bevel case. Fortunately, I had it off a couple months ago to re-gasket. Not a fun project removing thirty-plus year old gasket, but if need be to go back in, would be a lot quicker this time.
Thinking it's the nut at the other side of the motor. Either that, or the push-rod broke behind the release, but that doesn't make much sense...either.

The case may have to come off, in order to retrieve the piece.
Anyone recommend using an ape push rod, vs. oem?

Thanks Steve, but it looks like I'll be removing the case, considering I don't know where it landed inside, not to mention there appears to be no practical way to access it otherwise.

Used an extension magnet to get it out through the clutch hub. :whistle:swest wrote: How did you get the rest of the rod out? I don't think there'll be any cavity for the piece to fall into.
Steve
The slotted clutch release bolt was correctly adjusted...prior to the event. That bolt no-longer contacts the tip of the push rod, but is able to thread well into the release. If the broken piece was still inside the push rod cavity, the clutch would still operate with the clutch lever. As it is, the lever easily pulls to the grip with only the resistance of the cable tension spring pulling it back.
I think the broken tip is waiting in the case bottom, and will simply fall out when the case is slightly separated from the engine. If planned well, a properly positioned Dixie cup will catch it.
Thanks for the inspiration to problem solve this. I'll spend the next week of really nice weather, waiting on the part.
Would an APE push rod be recommended? If so, Jeff can expect my order first thing Monday morning.
