I did the same thing and in my case when the advancer cam points at the same coil it is marked at the T mark not F....... not sure why or what would cause it to do this since engine timing is individual from this. yes the advancer only goes in one way. im at a loss not sure what the hell to do other than drill slots and advance it.
ALso my timing advanver has a 005 yours says 1013 on it. which makes me wonder if it was ever replaced by the previous owner. maybe its not the right one????? im gona take some pictures.

here is when the cam aligns with the coils

am i crazy?
the bike itself dosent want to rev under load. like no power what so ever.

also i notice how my advancer looks different the cam is not the same degree with the marks, the weights looks sort of different as they dont have that lip at the end. end the plat says 005. maybe someone changed the advancer a while back??

All very strange. Your advancer looks a lot different to mine. I checked parts diagrams for 1980 KZ750 E1 and the advancer is part # 21148-1013 so I have the correct one and I have to agree that it looks like the PO swapped yours out for the 005

I also put part # 21148-005 into a few dealer websites and that is a part # for an advancer but I cant find for what. I might be able to find out tomorrow - (long story)- and which still wont make it work.

Steve may have the answer

You might be better off with a Dyna S

The old electronic units can have problems. I wouldn't waste money on it when a Dyna S would fit.

If you are timed at the T mark your timing is retarded and would explain sluggish performance.

Wrong advancer.

Patton commented on this 7 years 11 months ago on a thread called Dyna S timing .......... google the part number and it came up something to do about a 1974 - 1975 900 advancer that has 5 degree's of advance instead of 20 degree's........ Lodhvx was on it too. Will try to read more on it or check it out guys.
