Cam positioning for Andrews cams on a 76 kz650

I was wrapping up shimming the valves on my new bike when I noticed the rubber pads on the intake camshaft's sprocket were missing and along with them the arrow I would use to align its position. These are Andrews cams. I don't know anything more about them but am adding pics of the markings on them and would love to know more. There is an etched line in the sprocket where I assume the arrow would be after comparing the lobe position to that on the stock camsin the manual. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also curious about the slotted mounts on the sprockets. It appears by a couple indents that the intake one had be set a couple different ways. Should I set these to a more centered location or just let them be.

After comparing quite a few pics of stock set ups to my intake cam I'm 99% sure that the etched line is where the arrow on the intake sprocket pad used to be. It is also clear that the previous owner probably removed the pads in order to machine the adjustable mounting slot. My question now is whether I should move the mounted position to a more centered stock position? I only started the bike once before checking the valves and it backfired like crazy. I'm wondering if the adjustable sprocket setting could be the issue.

Have you ever degreed a camshaft before?

E-mail Andrews with your question. They were very helpful with my questions even though they don't make cams for KZ's anymore.

DH they are slotted cam sprockets, to allow for non standard cam timing, and/or to compensate for a skimmed head. Also it is unlikely the lobe centreline of a reground cam will be precisely where the standard cam was.

You need to look into dialing-in your cams. Don't fiddle with the settings for now, but you need to check they are right.

If you remove the bolts be sure to blue Loctite em too ........ I remember 8 1/2 lbs of torque..... maybe 95 -100 inch lbs from my manual. Always wanted to degree the cams but didn't.

I have never degreed a camshaft before but found this page online cavanaughracing.com/cam_degreeing.html If anyone knows of a better how to on this let me know. It seems like what I need to do. I won't move the settings till I know I need to.I'll also email Andrews the pics of the cam to find out more about it.

E-mail the pic of the stage 3 on the cams. On my chart from Andrews, stage 3 requires HP springs and machine work on the head to accept them. Might have already been done.

Where did you get stage 3?
He's working on a 650 not a 900/1000.

It was on the cam in one of his pics. I would like to see a pic of the end though. That's where they stamp them. The lobes look more aggressive than mine.

The Bike is a 650 that's been bored to a 738cc The only marks on the cam are the ones I posted in the pictures. There are the following stamps from left to right if it was sitting on the bike. K3 is stamped into the shaft after the first Lobe, Andrews and Chicago USA after the second, Stamped on the mount the sprocket bolts to is 4.2 and 7125 after that is D2 and C2 on opposite sides of the shaft just before the 3rd lobe and finally CWC and 1.5 on opposite sides of the shaft just before the final lobe. Hope this helps.
