cylinder studs was created by 123vucku
Taking apart my motor to replace my head gasket on a 1976kz900 a4 I noticed as I took of my two half gaskets they were soaked in oil towards the exhaust side of the motor where it was leaking... Also my cylinder studs on on the exhaust side 1 and 4 have like a puddle of oil in there little spots I feel that isn't right not sure . Wondering if I should get the ape studs . Someone please tell me if it's normal or if my studs need replacing . Thank you

Pull your bike up on Partszilla and look at the
part's break down I think some studs have an O-ring.

 Regarding assembly, will the best seal be achieved by installing those particular O-rings dry, or with sealer applied?

Relax. The 4 corner studs are the oil galleys that deliver the engine oil to the top end. And this leak is common and normal on older engines that have been together for a long time.
The trick is to make a very thin 3/4 moon bead of RTV on the block, (that's the top of the cylinder block) at the 4 corner studs about an 1/8" back.
Let the RTV set up and cure a day before you put the head on and assemble.

OK yea u thought so but wasn't sure and do u mean like the hole the stud goes through ? Make a bead around there right just so it doesn't seep? And thank you and 1/8 back do u mean down the hole 1/8

NO! Not near the hole!!! That,s were the oil flows up to and into the head.
You want it back at least a 1/4" away from the studs. I don't have a bare cylinder the show you with a picture.
The oil flows from the lower end up through 4 outer cylinder studs. Look at your cylinder head, at the 4 outer stud holes and you can see the oil passages, which let the oil flow into the head.
I always just did it by feel and repetitiveness over 40 years.

New gaskets have sealant made into them. Using it around oil galleys is dangerous. If you use it, just make the surface tacky not a bead. I don't use it on new gaskets. The surface must be clean, dry and undamaged for a good seal. You can and should make the large O ring that goes around the cam chain tacky. I use copper RTV silicon. The copper rings around the outer oil passages are meant to seal them as they compress. Using RTV to make them tacky is harmless but don't use it to seal the cylinders or anywhere around them.

after market cylinder studs is a waste of money on a street motor. unless you plan on a turbo or super charger...or some of the existing one have tread damage.

Steve- the large o ring around the cam chain area- do you let the copper rtv setup a bit? Or do you just put a bit on the run with your fingers before seating it and installing the cylinders?

Thanks, as always.
