Z1 engine with no serial numbers?
28 Dec 2014 14:17 - 28 Dec 2014 14:25
Didn't know really where to put this question, so posted it here in the engine section.
I picked up this 1975 Z1 last week that doesn't numbers stamped into the engine cases.
I know they haven't been filed off either. The casting ridge around the stamping area is still in tact.
Would this been a damaged motor back in the day and Kawasaki replaced the cases with one's that weren't stamped?

I have also a set of unmarked 550 cases.
Given the cost of those crankcases - sold as a matched pair, it guess it would only really be a warranty repair job back in the day. There were some NOS cases on ebay while ago also unmarked.

Those are likely warranty cases. Do you have a valid title for the motorcycle? There might be issues if you are attempting to register the motorcycle in any state other than the one where the current title was issued. I had a set of blank warrantied cases in a 1977 KZ1000A...had a few hoops to leap through in California when I moved the bike to Texas.

Not in your case, but in some......could be a stolen engine, they would remove the number off the cases. You can tell if it had been removed, the very outside of the stamped area had a raised lip all the way around. If the raised lip is gone, then it was messed with.
In Ohio, the DMV only cares about the frame or neck number, they could care less about the engine number.
The Ohio insurance company does care about the engine number and requires it.

I doubt it was stolen, I bought it from a cop.
It hasn't been filed down either. Read my first post.

Washed parts in trichloroethylene with no gloves, always had a 5 gal. pail of carb cleaner (Gunk Solder Seal) the real bad stuff in the garage. Just to name a few. Could explain it. Made it to 57 now, no growths or goiters growing on me yet, anyway.
But, I hope you got the motorcycle for a decent price, it looks nice!
And all the titles go by the frame Z1F--- Don't worry about engine, stamp the #'s yourself.
I have dozens of times including frames over the last 40 years.
They use a simple 1/4" basic, straight up stamp.
Now Harley was a whole different story, they purposely changed angles, had different star shapes, off center. Every few years back in the early days of Pan & Shovel head. They changed them up. Which the DOT new about.
Sorry if I offended anyone.

Yeah Kawasaki had extra cases and didn't stamp the racing ones ether. Do a title search to find the dealer and if still around get a statement form them.

I'm pretty sure back in the day Wisconsin titles there motorcycles from the engine. I dragged several home from the cheese state and that's how there were titled..Probably because Harly Davidson never had numbers on the frame on the early bikes.
Plus I recently picked up a 75 z1 from Arkansas and it was titled against the motor
As far blank z1 engines I have seen several of those myself. They are factory replacement engines. I can go buy a complete never fired new in crate over the counter z1/kz900 engine small exhaust studs. It has blank stamp pad with the ridge like late 74 75 z1
$10k for the crate engine and a completely restored 75 z1
