1980 LTD 1000..,1976 LTD 900, have the 1000&900 now. the rest are previous= 1978 KZ 650 B.., 1980 Yamaha XT 500..,1978 Yamaha DT 400.., 1977 Yamaha yz 80..,Honda trail ct 70.., Honda QA 50...5-1/2 hp brigs & straton CAT chopper mini bike...3-1/2 hp mini bike (WHEN GAS WAS ABOUT 45 CENTS A GALLON)!!!!

Was it a folded ring ??

Yep, just the very bottom oil ring on both 2 & 3. I will have to make a ring compressor so I can prevent it from happening again.pete greek1 wrote: Was it a folded ring ??

Take a feeler gauge and measure the space between the cylinder walls and pistons. First at the top, then in the middle and the bottom. Measure at four points around the pistons. 12:00, 3:00, 6:00, 9:00. Measure your pistons as well,top then bottom. Loose pistons can be noisy and you can bust a skirt. That happened to me 30 years ago. I left a smoke trail a mile long all the way home. Do it right the first time and you won't be disappointed. Doesn't sound like you need to split the cases.
