Pistons 2&3 stuck

28 Nov 2014 10:26

Guys I need your help. I am reassembling my stock kz1000 engine. I dropped something down the timing chain slot when to pull my jugs to retrieve it and the #2&3 pistons won't let go. I sprayed WD-40 around the top of the cylinder walls and it is not going anywhere. I have yanked, cussed and tapped the top of the piston with a wooden handle and a hammer and they just won't budge.

Maybe if you drop the oil pan, you can see what the problem is

Ummmmmm... WD40 is not really a lube... more of a water repellent. Might want to get something like Kroll, or make your own with Acetone and ATF (50/50).

Oh, the other thought that (sarcastically) comes to mind... get a bigger hammer!

Good luck and keep us posted with what you find the problem to be and the fix...

The oil pan is not on it. The bigger issue right now are the stuck pistons. If I can't get the jugs off the starter certainly won't turn the crank. :-( I will get some Kroll, spray it and leave it alone for a while. Thanks guys. Any other suggestions in the mean time are certainly welcome.

I don't understand what's going on. You mention "reassembling the engine", which implies it's been apart already. Then some reference to dropping something down the cam chain slot, but I don't understand what this has to do with getting the cylinder to pull off.

Has the engine sat for a long time? Could the rings be rusted to the bores? If so, than that spray oil may help. What am I missing?

Dropped something down the chain slot? Is it bound up between the chain and crank and that's what is keeping the pistons stuck? If those two are stuck arent the other two? You only have one block so 2&3 arent stuck, all four are? If your crank doesnt turn and you are reassembling them the crank is jammed up; if you cant pull the object out (magnet, long pick etc) flip the engine out and jiggle it loose; otherwise split the case and pull the crank center cap?

Crank turns fine. 1&4 are out. When I pull up on the jugs the crank spins until 2&3 are at the top and stops. I took the jugs and head off to have the head done, replaced rings after honing cylinders. I oiled the cylinders compressed the rings and slid the jugs over the pistons. Everything went smoth until I tried to remove the jugs again and realized 2&3 were stuck in place.

I couldn't find Kroll oil at the auto parts store. I got some liquid wrench instead. It's just sitting on top of the piston. It has been for 2 hours now. I'm just hoping over night or a few days will get it done. Maybe I need to go 1075 after all.;-)

Try some gas/trans fluid in the cylinders to loosen them up. ;)

Question... 2 & 3 didn't get a bit skewed in the cyls' did they? ...and bind up for this reason? (just askin')

I mean... from what your OP reads, it sounds like you're in the middle of a rebuild and the motor has not yet been run, right? So I don't understand what's binding 2 & 3... When everything was on... can I presume you've had the head on(?)... did you spin the crank and everything moved ok? (just trying to understand where you are with all of this)

if you are not putting tension on the cam chain when turning the crank, it will bind ( wad up ), locking up the motor.
