Thats pretty much normal deposits for these motors over time. I'd be Much more worried about the valves themselves are seating/ sealing. Then if they leak, are the clearances correct? If they are OK and the valves leak, then you have a reason to pull the head off. If those valves are pitted deep enough, worn, etc, you'd be replacing them as part of a valve job. Otherwise don't waste to much effort on a bit of deposits.

bountyhunter wrote: Not that anybody asked, but that buildup is normal. I wish mine were that clean. If you really want to see a bunch of carbon crud, you should see whats on the inside surfaces of the valve faces and head.
What cleans it: the machine shop drops the head into something affectionately known as a "hot tank" which is filled with bubbling heated chemicals..... and you will notice nobody putting their hand in there.
If the valves are free you can soak them in Chemdip and take a stiff nylon brush to them.

Berryman's B-12 Chemtrol is another cleaner-type product.
I would do what MotorHead & others say and do the valve clearance & compression checks.... the checks are easy.

In the gas tank right? I am not messing with a bunch of t-fittings. this is mainly because the the valves won't close if they are too gummed up.

I put it back together last night, going to have to leave the crashbar off there and be careful because it is tighter than snug with these pipes. I'll take a picture when I put the daytona handlebars on there. crap I need to drill a hole for the throttle.
