newbie needing help with engine rebuild. was created by pauleaston
My first post! I have a 76 kz900 ltd that I found a couple years ago all piled up in a corner of a gravel pit(very sad picture) and asked the owner if I could have it. Since that day I have spent alot of time and money working on it. Mostly brakes, suspension, electrical, and carb work. I ran it last summer and put 1000 mi on it. But it doesnt pull like I think it should, and it doesnt idle well either. Ive buggered with the carbs and removed the existing pods and found a stock air box for it. Still not running as well as I want. So recently I yanked the engine out of the frame and started tearing it down. So far I discovered the intake cam lobes are under spec and the valves and pistons are loaded with flakes and large carbon deposits. I havent removed the valves yet ( need to get a spring compression tool.

My question: What do you suggest I do now? Should I upgrade my cams? I want good power but I want a stable, reliable ride. i have a stock bike. But i would be willing to spend some money for better performance but I'm not looking to build a drag bike. Just looking for best bang for my buck. any suggestions will be helpful.

Welcome to z-jungle.
A small set of drop in cams would be a good wakeup for a solid motor,Id go through rest of motor and check everything else while youre in there though B)

Where is the best place to find (or order) drop in cams? Which Cams would provide the best performance? Z1enterprises doesn't seem to sell them and I'd rather not gamble with ebay.

They've got some .365 web cams that would help wake it up for ya B)

I see your serious, Nice clean layout you have pictured. A mild set of drop ends or even the stock cams are not bad, way under rated! Just a nice tidy well running engine is pretty stout.

I would check the bore see if it's in spec, and if so hone it and Re-Ring it with these for $99.80

Then I'd send my head here for a freshen up.

And I'd find a set of GPz1100 Cams 1983-1984 to drop-in like these.

That sounds like a plan. Would a carb upgrade be worth it as well? since I have to sink money into it anyways, I might as well do it right, right? How much lift does the gpz1100 cams have?

A stock set of 28s off a 79-80 1000 would give you a cheap good running upgrade B)

I believe they are .365 Lift but I'll get back to you with a solid number.

Also if you find 28mm Pumper carburetors for your bike, swap the Needles from your 26's which are adjustable, into the 28's which are not adjustable.

No.... And for future reference, when the bike is bouncing off of the Dyna Rev Limiter.... It's time to shift son.
