It's good to hear that what I experienced with the sight glass isn't all that uncommon. I'm still planning to do a little seafoam flush before the oil change this weekend.

gravity always wins. Sediment settles to the bottom and lives there forever.Tomolu5 wrote: My bike has had the oil changed between 2500-3000 miles its whole life, only 20 some thou on it now, and there was a half inch of crap when I dropped the pan

If the site glass is truly that dirty you can't easily see oil levels...
Why not lean the bike on side stand (oil flow to left side of engine).
Then remove the clutch cover and clean the site glass (Q-tip) with Seam Foam if you wish or some other cleaner such as rubbing alcohol...
Or replace the site glass from Z1 with a new one...
This way you won't have to worry about oil contaminants/particles stuck throughout your engine/clutch plates...
Seems simple enough...

OMR, that's basically what I've been planning. Though it's not the sight glass that's dirty, it's something behind the glass that seemed to clog it and prevent oil from flowing in.
I've got another clutch side cover and my plan has been:
Put some sea foam in the oil and go for a ride.
Drain all the oil out.
Swap clutch side covers.
Replace oil filter and refill oil.
Polish and restore original clutch cover.
Swap clutch covers back at next oil change.
