Mission accomplished. Just needed a little sleep. As I suspected I drained about half a quart and the oil level was spot on.

Had an oil and filter change planned this weekend anyway. May put a little seafoam in the crankcase first to loosen up the sludge that must have been blocking the sight glass.

Really? I thought this was a fairly common thing. It's on the can of seafoam as a recommended use and I thought I'd heard of other folks doing it.

The directions basically say to put a little seafoam in with the oil, ride for a bit, then change oil and filter.

Is this a really bad idea?

I've been doing that to engines for years, though never on a motorcycle. Stuff works great, but you definitely want to change oil right after, so if it breaks something loose it isn't floating around.

The only concern I'd have is whether or not it might have some effect on the clutch in a bike, since they're in contact with the oil, and the wrong oil always causes problems with them, I'd look into whether anything in the seafoam might have similar effects on the clutch.

I change my oil every 3000 miles...cones out light amber not sludge or black. why even get oil to that state where an additive to clean it needs to be put in???

I change mine regularly too. I've had the bike about a year and a half and am just trying to guess what could have blocked the sight glass.

My bike has had the oil changed between 2500-3000 miles its whole life, only 20 some thou on it now, and there was a half inch of crap when I dropped the pan, I even flushed with kero every once in a while. So, for the money, what could it hurt?

Mine:
04 Honda rebel 250(wifes)
04 GSXR 750(bolt on galore)
98 CBR 600F3(filter, pipe, adjustable cam sprokets, dyno tune)
76 KZ900A (LTD gauge pods, crash bars, LTD(style)pipes, dyna coils and ignition, headwork and mild port cleanup by cavanaugh racing, K&N filter pods, heck I dunno.

The ride was great. I live in rural Virginia and had to go into Richmond for the day for work. I decided to make it fun and took scenic backroads all the way in.

Here in VA the weather's at that point where in the morning with the liner in my jacket and all the vents closed it's a touch chilly and in the afternoon without the liner and the vents open it's just perfect. I guess Fall is on the way.
