Too much oil?

I noticed I was a little low on oil tonight. I could just barely see a liitle in the bottom off the sight glass. So I added half a quart, then another, and another. No change in the sifht glass. Had my wife sit on the bike and lean it over, no change in the sight glass.

Now I'm worried my sight glass is clogged and I've got one and a half extra quarts of oil.

Got a trip planned tomorrow with no time to drain and refill.

What's the danger with riding with too much oil?

the question could be how much to fill bike with proper amount of oil from the bottom of site glass? then you take out the excess. Im sorry I dont know.... :whistle:

The problem is I'm worried my sight glass is clogged and not giving me a proper reading.

I'm wondering whether an extra quart and a half of oil could cause serious problems on a couple hour ride.

I feel you might have 3/4 to qt too much in the case. It can cause probs..it can come out of the case vent...if you have emissions it can get into the air box and foul things....I read this week that it caused a throttle to stick.... kzrider.com/forum/2-engine/545146-had-stuck-throttle

Possibly blowing out the output(the drive sprocket shaft)seal,causing the sparkplugs to foul and straining(stressing) other seals through the engine.....

Topper, you have to correct oil issue....I have never heard of a site glass problem other than leak....if you oil is that dirty...that it could clog the site glass....well I wont go there....just slide a pan under, loosen drain plug bolt and drain some out....15 min job.

Drain all the oil and fill it with the correct amount.

Not that easy in the dark, on a gravel driveway with no replacement oil and nearest store 45 minutes away.

MFolks reply was enough to encourage me to try a little harder at getting a sight glass reading. I stood beside the bike and leaned it as far over to the right as I could. Jostled it a bit and when I put it back on the center stand suddenly I can see oil in the sight glass.

It's near, but not at the top mark next to the window. I ran it a bit, watched the oil drain out of the window, turned it off and watched it fill back up to the same spot. I now feel like I might be slightly over full, but not dangerously so.

What do you all think?

Hmmmmm.......... :blink: ......thinking....... :evil: blacktop the driveway and / or move closer to the store that sells oil :woohoo:

I got in a hurry and over filled mine blew the valve cover plug out
and soaked my leg with hot oil not fun

that had to suck....how bad did you get burned?
