I would at least do a leak down. You can take an air tank and leak down gauge along with a breaker bar and a socket to fit the drive sprocket nut to hold the engine in a high gear and at TDC. I understand you may not have a leak down gauge but one can be borrowed from an auto parts store. $900 is a lot of cash and better safe than sorry.

Another good point: in this economy, everything is negotiable. There is a "limited market" for 30 year old bike engines. If you flash five crisp new Ben Franklins under his nose, you just might have a deal. Anyway, worth a try.

+1 Plenty of decent known quality options here.

77 KZ1000A1 - Under going a psuedo ELR overhaul
79 KE175 (gone)
81 KZ550A2 (gone)

Sure it looks OK now, but wait until I really make it pretty, with some chrome and paint and some new tires and grips and the wiring. Don't forget the gearing, and the LED's and, and, and....

Ive done rebuilds for $1200. In your case I would find a different motor, to many miles on the crank and trans. $900 seems high as you can find these bikes for $500.

If I lived closer to Michigan you can bet I'd be all over that 650, but the gas to pick it up would eat me alive.

Well, my problem has been solved. I found a 1980 KZ1000 Shaftie with 20k miles for just a couple hundred bucks more than a nused engine from a salvage yard. So now I have another bike crammed into the garage.

My girlfriend said "If you spend one more night out there, Im leaving you"
I started missing her, so I washed the bike real nice and found a new girlfriend.

Remember, don't work on your bike so much you never ride it.
