I used an old burned up starter. I gutted it and epoxied the hole with JB weld using duct tape on one side so the epoxy wouldn't flow out. I put the front half of the gutted starter back into the motor and mounted the rear half as usual. I then put the starter cover back on to secure the whole thing. There is an empty space between the front and rear halfs of the starter but the cover secures them both. This will not allow the front part to come out. Worked pretty slick and cost me about $5.00.

update: well god broke the mold when he made a re re like me.
stm frame plug wont work, was an expansion plug, and might work for a 1000, or 900.
but 30mm is way off for a 650, i measured and came up with 48mm, called ape, and they
make a 30mm and a 40mm, not a 48mm, has anyone else with a 650 ever measured the hole for their starter? freezer plugs i find are only like 3/10 of an inch deep, , suggestions?

back to same point then... compared to the 900/1000's, very few raced or tuned 650/750's, so no surprise there are no 48mm starter plugs for them.

between buying a piece of 2" Al bar and a beer for my lathe owning friend, the cost of my custom made plug was about 7.46$ or so :)

OK, not as cheap as baldy's  but then again, i really wanted to get rid of anything possible in my racer and i run without a sprocket cover for more weight saving as well as quick access to the front sprocket for ratio swaps while on track. Gpz750 has the clutch release mechanism on the clutch cover :)

if you have to keep the full sprocket cover, then baldy's idea is actually not that weird, but if you cut up the cover for weight savings too, then you might as well go the whole hog.

that said, after five seasons of road racing i can assure you that this sort of weight saving is not going to chop a second off your lap times, just make you feel nicer inside ;)

It sure won't make your bike feel better! Do you plan to actually try to ride the bike without the "sprocket cover?"

TG is riding a GPZ750 which has a different clutch mechanism than the Kz650. The Kz650 needs the sprocket cover as part of the clutch actuation. Would be a lot of work to get rid of it, not sure I would think it would be worth the effort.

sure, but i did get rid of it in my CB500/4 which has a mech in the cover like a Z650. not a must, but IMHO, the screw based clutch lifters suck, i built a custom lever based one instead.

not the best pic, but still :)
