I havent ran them yet, its a little icy where I live. They tightened down and squished the gasket there pretty good so im assuming they'll work, being as the stockers with the port on them just had a flat surface for the gasket to seal as these do. I'm going to bolt them together and sand the edges so they are both identical.

And im gonna polish them on the wheel and make them shiney.

550, seems you touched off a firestorm. I was gonna say: "nice job, true custom piece. The hell with the guys and their fancy CNC machines" (wish I had one). Don't worry, it looks fine. You can scratch your initials with a file.

I think there are at least three different sizes/shapes, 1000/1100, 650/750, and 550. Someone already posted dimensions to confirm 650 and 550 are different. I assume there is a good chance the 750-four and 650 are the same. The 1000 appears different from the 650 and 550, but I assume, again, that the 1100 is the same as the 1000. I don't know about the 750-twins. The 400/440 twins use single cam so I'm pretty sure they are a unique item.

550 to 650 comparison:

In addition to the Ape ones, there are sellers on ebay making some really nice ones (note Otto's, and Thompsonmx100's link in that thread), and I'm pretty sure they are not from China :) .

BTW, 550A2, nice job on the home-made ones.

Congrats on the pieces. When I first got into bikes we didn't even have a hand grinder. We built bikes with a welder, bench grinder, and used coat hangers to mend expansion chambers.

Just building simple things is good expierence and your knowledge will grow.

Great work. Roy

Nice job on the one-off!

Aside from being some nice guys, APE makes some cool stuff, so I asked them about making reed caps for the KZ/GPz550 line. Lou sent me the dimensions from his '81, and it's the same as on my '85. A few e-mails back and forth to APE, and I sent them the parts to look over. Back came the proto types, and the fit and finish is very nice. Functions, and seals excellent.

When they become available, I'll be buying a few sets. I could use a set on my daily commuter, Elvira.

Thanks for the comments guys.

It thoughed out I went for a little ride out in the county yesterday, they seem to work great. There is no exhaust popping on deceleration or anything, Also there was no evidence of soot arounf the base of them.

I wonder how much the new APE ones will cost?

I wasn't at all saying anything bad about the ones you hand made. My comments were strictly about casting and production parts, as I assume most people don't cast one off parts at home often.

Sorry the discussion took over for a bit.
