Bikes kickstart won't move was created by Cookie1893
I'm only 14 years old but I am very skilled at motors on cars so I thought I would try motorcycle engines. Well I was in for more than I bargained for. I had no money so I traded a snow thrower for a 1977 kz650 motor only and half the frame. It was in a bad accident and the frame was bent so the guy I bought in from cut the Frame in half and sold me the frame and the motor. The motor has 12,527 miles on it and is on pretty good shape all around. I had no problem ordering parts for it or anything but what really has me hung up is the kickstarter. It won't move at all. I can basically jump on it and it won't even give a little at all. The bike turns over if I take off the side cover and spin it with a ratchet but it won't turn over with electric start and it won't kick over. I Have a feeling either the kickstart shaft is stuck or the clutch is engaged but I honestly have never worked on a bike motor Before so I am stumped. Any help out there? I really wanna get this beast running! ;)

Thanks!
Alex

make sure the the transmission is in neutral...or that could give you some grief...

click the shifter down 5 times, then click it a half of a click up. thats neutral.

Also if the engine hasnt been run for a while you should remove the spark plugs and squirt a generous amount of pennetrating oil down in each cylinder...ATF works great for this too being it has alot of detergents in it..By doing this you will free up the cylinders.

Thanks luke I will deffinatly try the ATF formula down each cylinder. Also I cannot shift because in the accident it fell over and busted the shifter off but I can probably use a small vise grips to shift it. But anyways thanks alot man and keep on riding.

do not use vise grips ...get a shifter off e-bay or a parts yard...DO NOT USE VISE GRIPS.... it is in gear i bet...just get a 10.00 shifter and tighten it on well and save the spline threads or you will have a wiggly shifter later for sure...

I will post some pics later tonight. And by the way thanks for the heads up about the vise grips! U just saved me from some major work. I just bought a shifter off eBay for 3.99 with 4.99 shipping. It was off of a 79 ltd. I figure that will work because it's the same motor.

By the way there really isn't much to see. Just imagine half of a frame with the motor without any exhaust pipes and no carbs and that's basically what I have haha I will still send pics though. It is a 1977 k-650 with the serial number kz-650c-011085. I don't know if that's an early model or not.

It is because it is very very hard to hand crank it even with the plugs pulled out so I'm oiling up the crank and pistons so it will turn easier

what kind of accident was the bike in?
pull the stator cover and see if it's touching the rotor.

if not, which one of us is going to tell him the bad news?

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.
