There is no change to how the oil returns to the sump.
It drains back down as standard via the camchain tunnel located between the center cylinders..

I could be wrong, but I thought there were restricted orifices on the block to keep all of the oil pressure from going to the cams.

I am fat more familiar with the 650/750 motors, so that could be why.

Great write up and thanks for taking the time!

You are partly correct.
On the 650/750 motors they run a shell bearing crank which needs the high oil pressure hence the restrictors but the 900/1000/1100 motors run roller bearing cranks which get away with only 3psi approx when fully warmed up so they have no restrictors in the cam oil feed..

And here is my finished oiling setup.

I made some billet oil cooler take offs and inserted an alloy splitter block on the return side so that the head gets cooled oil.
The hose is Earls dash 6 which has a 5mm bore with banjo's specified to take a 10mm bolt.
The banjo bolts have been made by myself using 10mm allen bolts and have been bored 5mm.
I've run this set up for 10 years now on a couple of my zeds with no problems at all.
Hope this thread is of some help ?

Nice work, Zed1015 and thanks for the post. I would like to do this to my GPZ1100 next time the head is off. On that bike, there is a factory oil cooler take off where your billet one is. Have you done one to a GPZ where you might make a series of T fittings to get your new oil lines to the head or did you just use a similar billet one? It looks like from the photo, I see a hose clamp for one of the cooler lines. I would like to keep the original crimped lines that go into the takeoff junction for the GPZ cooler. 'Got a better photo of your billet cooler junction where the left hand side can be seen?

Thanks, Stephen

Here's a pic of the other side. On this engine i made a two piece fitting as it was easier than adapting the std oil pressure switch although i then had to fit a pressure gauge on the main oil gallery as i didn't make provision for the oil pressure switch. Previously i have used aftermarket oilcooler take offs that kept the pressure switch and plumbed in the splitter block on the return line.

On the gpz you might be able to use some 'T' pieces as you say or maybe an easier option would be to make a fitting that screws (m14 x 1.5mm) in to the end of the main oil gallery (where the factory test gauge screws in) just above and behind the ignition housing and take the oil lines from there.

Good idea!

Also do you do this to both sides of the head? If so i don't see the line going to the other side.

Hi Z1015
I live in Brighton in the UK and just wondered whether you would be up for doing this mod on my Z1100 which has fuel injection fitted. I have an oil cooler that I want to fit too.
Some time over the winter would be great if you have any time- I do have van transport to ship the whole bike if that is easier.
Whereabouts in the UK are you?
