I do alot of shopping around for parts and z1 enterprises usually has the best, unless something pops up on ebay. They also ship very fast.

make sure when you are doing a compression check that the throttle is open all the way and that you crank it over until the gauge stops not a certain number of times.

I would expect to see higher if it was mainly rings. The valves are probably not sealing well.

I found some good new valves on ebay pretty cheap for my 750 twin. I think the seller was RustyRiderLLC.

You can get brand new oversized OEM piston/ring sets for about $72 (set of two) in sizes of +0.25mm - +1.0mm from a place called cyclewareables.com. You won't find those any cheaper.

NOTE: If you need valve guides, I have a full set of actual Kawasaki brand new OEM guides I will sell at a discount.

Old Bike Barn used to sell the valve shaft seals for the 750 twins. They are very hard to find.

In general, the best places for parts are:

Z1 Enterprises

Have valve clearances been checked and if necessary adjusted to specs?

Would also consider a leak-down test to more precisely indicate where compression is escaping.

Good Luck! :)

when i did my compression test i did have the throttle wide open but just to be sure i did it againand added more oil than the first time and got 120 on #1 and 155 on#2 with about a cap full in each cylender i checked all valves and there all within specs and did a valve leak down test and dont appear to have any leaks in the valves oh and i checked compression again before oil with throttle open and had 92#1 and 95#2 best i can figure it points to rings i found a compleate gasket set on ebay for around $70 can i beat that price or should i go ahead and get it thanks

The athena gasket set listed above is about $79. I used that set for my rebuild. The head gasket was good but the cylinder base gasket failed and I had to tear it down again to replace it. The valve cover gasket was pretty much crap as well. That set does NOT come with valve seals even if it says it does. IMHO, it is not a good deal and you should NOT use the base gasket, use it as a stencil and buy some good gasket material at Auto Zone..

ok thanks i have a roll of gasket material ill definatly take your advise there i took the engine apart last night and did not see any damage to the head, valves or the seats im going to drop it off at my local machine shop and have it all checked. I also found that whoever have been in the engine before had all the seams of the rings in the same spot on the pistons. But I do not see any damage to anything they also fit kinda loose the cylender walls look pretty fresh. Im kinda thinking that someone has recently been in the engine and had the jugs machined a little with a stock piston but I have no way to be sure. would the bike have even ran like that? I still havent recived the manual that I bought on ebay so I have no specs to mic the pistons or cylender or should I just hsve the jugs bored and buy pistons to match thanks again for ant help

Considering how much work you are about to do, I would definitely take the cylinders to the same machine shop so they can measure the diameter and roundness. It will take them about 30 seconds to know if it needs to be bored based on the wwear on the cylinder walls.

God only knows what was done before you got it, but it is easy to see what you need to do to fix it if you have accurate measuring tools and all machine shops have those.

I have a '79 manual:

cylinder inside diam (FOR STOCK PISTONS):

standard 78.000-78.019mm, less than 0.01mm difference between any measurements going from top to bottom.

service limit: 78.10mm, .05mm difference between any two diameter measurements going top to bottom

Piston-cylinder clearance: standard 0.043 - 0.070mm

piston diameter: standard 77.94 - 77.96mm

service limit: 77.8mm

piston ring-groove clearance: standard 0.01-.05mm
limit: 0.15mm

ring end gap: standard 0.2-0.4mm
service limit: 0.7mm
