just reassembled it and got it to where I am comfortable with the result.
I have a quick question though:
When I rotate the crank everything moves smooth and fine and then right when I'm passing TDC on 2-3 the chain gets a little slack in it. What could make this happen?

At TDC is when the rear side of camchain has the most slack, and is the position when the routine camchain adjuster maintenance setting should be performed.

Good Luck! :)

thanks... everything is looking good. My valve clearances are about .001" higher on 2&3 intake and exhaust than I'd like them to be, but that should be fine. It'll still fire.

sure does...
although I'm getting a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust ports.
My head gasket seems to be leaking as well (which sucks cuz it's brand new).
It doesn't smell like burned oil, but I suppose it could be.
Is this to be expected when starting a motor for the first time? Does engine assembly lube make it smoke like that? Do new piston rings need some break in time and could that lead to a little oil in the exhaust??
any thoughts? Granted, I know the thing is 30 years old and a little leak is to be expected, but I'm wondering if there is anything else I should be looking for?
other than that it runs fine... starts right up, throttles nice... idles fine.

it may just be too much asemble lube or oil burning at start up . dont worry unless it doesnt go away. but the head gasket leak worries me. when the motor has cooled completely, retorque it, in the proper torque sequince order. loosen each bolt a wee bit then retorque it. then go on to the next bolt. some guys dont loosen them first but i do. also, i put a bit of silicone under each bolt head to help keep the oil in and act at a torque lube..the copper washers are suposed to do that for u but i like to do everything to the extreme. It's a fault i know.
How did it run? what did u replace in the motor?

ran great! the first start I aided with a little starter fluid, but after that it fired right away and ran strong. Gotta tweak the idle and fix that silly gasket leak, but man was it good to hear that thing firing... man it sounded mean!!!
So here's what's new in the motor: new rings (bore honed as well), new exhaust valves (the intake ones were fine), port work done on the head (Larry Cavanaugh did a great job) and new Andrews cams. I got new coils too.
The gasket is that two part gasket for the cylinder head and the oil is coming from the middle where the gasket doesn't cover it. I don't know if that helps the troubleshooting.
I DID give the inside of the cylinders a good amount of assembly lube so hopefully that is all it is... how long until I should start worrying about it?
If it were burning oil wouldn't it SMELL like it? Because it didn't really smell like burning oil... and the smoke was more gray and white than black. Maybe the fumes had gotten to me by then though. ;)

did u put the large o-ring in the block, between the 2 head gaskets?

This is the o-ring they are refering to:

Site between the two halves of the head gasket.

Hahaha.... I was like, "O-ring?? Oh shit...." but yes, I DID put that piece in. I didn't really think of that as an "O" ring... haha...
I also see that Z1 has a one piece copper gasket.... I might just have to get that.... I mean, the ones I have on there now are brand new and they're leaking... so maybe a one-piece is the way to go???
