When my bud had his Suzuki 1000S he told me he practiced panic stops with it to get the feel....often told me too.... a little later a guy at the post office pulled out in front of him and he stopped inches away..... said he would have hit him for sure without the practice.

In Illinois, part of the ride test for an M license is/was to accelerate up to a certain speed and lock the rear brake and maintain control in a straight line for a short disance. I remember doing that many years ago, and when I went with my buddy for his test, about 10 years ago, he had to do it then as well.

If there was an ABS feature preventing rear lockup, I guess they would have to skip that part of the test.

My one buddy, who can pretty much outride anyone I know, started very young, and in the dirt. I wish I had. You learn a lot of good lessons when you are tiny and indestructable.

The reason i bought my shafty is I had one in 1985. the reason I didnt have one in 1986?
I let a guy ride it who locked the rear tire in a panic.. they measure the tire skid 162 feet..he never touched the front brake.
I was standing there watching the whole thing. and i knew if it were me i had plenty of time to stop or even go around the car.
the end result was a totaled car and bike and two broke legs.
Lesson learned ? never let anyone ride yer bike!! or yer wife :woohoo:
