I guess I was hooked on the first bike I ever had. I was 9 and my dad got me a 1960 I think Yamaha 50cc stepthrough. Yamaha started import in 1958, so this was early Japanese streetbike in 50cc. We used it as a trail bike. In 1971 dad got me a brand new Yamaha 90cc HT1 enduro. That was my first real motorcycle and I just loved it, then worked up to 175s then my dad got me a brand new closeout 1975 DT400 right after my 16th birthday for $900 and I was really hooked then. Got 14,000 miles use of of that motorcycle in 15 months of ownership. Those old Yamaha enduros were fantastic. Then in 1978 the whole world changed when my dad and me traded in both our motorcycles on the new KZ650, which I promptly confiscated from dad and claimed as my own all these years. I've been hooked since the beginning and getting worse if anything. Wife gets all pissed off all I care about is motorcycles. Is there anything else?

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

As a 16 year old in 1965 having a Honda S65 the bike that probably hooked me was some older teens on Yamaha 250 Big Bear Scramblers. Looking back they are not that impressive. But for a kid with a 65 cc Honda, the look and the fact that I can still remember the high pitch bumble bee sounds a mile away make them a bike that hooked me.

I had a bunch of Yamaha 250cc and 350cc bikes in the 73-75 era. The way they handled convinced me to continue with bikes. Once I bought my first Z1 in 1976 (a used 74 Z1A), I've been hooked on Z1's. I've ridden better handling and faster bikes, but the Z1 is the only one I can relate to.

My avatar is one of my first Z1's - the engine of my first Z1A and the frame of a Z1B. My friend destroyed the frame on my first Z1 when he ran into the back of a milk truck...

This is my first bike. Bought it to ride to work and back when I was 14. Only had to go about a mile but rode this thing year round. Even more when it snowed. These things were a blast! Beat it to death and it just kept going. After a couple years a Suzuki 90 dual-purpose bike followed me home. Couple bikes later I brought home a 1972 H-2 that I rode on street for awhile and then started drag-racing. Still wish I hadn't sold it but sold it to buy my first Z1 around 1977 and have owned Z1's ever since. That Honda 90 hooked for good! Must have been the speed demon in me...or the 40 mph top speed!

For dirt it was my uncles 250 Ossa Super Phantom. For road it was my uncles Suzuki GT750 and his 1977 KZ650b1. I cannot find a pic of his GT but there is this. His 650.

Take it from me cuz I found
If you leave it then somebody else is bound,
To find that treasure, that moment of pleasure,
When yours, it could have been.
