Tell him you need the bike for a classic bike photo competition, tell him you will split the prize with him if you win it... LOL maybe he will send it.

Twenty-One years old with a Z1 at a party school in a tropical climate with two roommates who owned bikes (Gpz550 and 550 Seca). Life was good!
Or maybe this was bike that first hooked me:
Not even sure what make it is.

i'm thinkin the old bike is an ariel.
the bike that "hooked me"has to be the first brown and orange 73 z1 that my dad had.
watching him drag race on the street in front of our house was pretty heady stuff for an impressionable kid.

Sorry, didn't want to hi-jack the topic here. But just a quick response. I think you are close. I was thinking the following:
1951 Ariel Square 4, The head looks big like the one in the picture I posted (must be taken in 1961). I think these were 1000 cc push rod type square four cylinder engines. Even though it has one exhaust showing, the exhaust manifold was built right into the head.
Edit: My bad on the above guess, more likely its similar to this BSA M20 or M21.
Once again, sorry to get off topic.
