Tell him you need the bike for a classic bike photo competition, tell him you will split the prize with him if you win it... LOL maybe he will send it.

1974 Z1900 from my old college days. Notice the back pack full of books held down with the bungee. Purchased it for $800 in '82. Originally candy apple brown and orange and completely stock. Even though I was poor at the time, I managed to install a Kerker header, K&N pods, manufactured my own license plate holder to eliminate the rear fender, installed the Shoi fairing and even applied my own botched candy apple red paint job (actually would have come out pretty nice if it wasn't for the humidity).

Twenty-One years old with a Z1 at a party school in a tropical climate with two roommates who owned bikes (Gpz550 and 550 Seca). Life was good!

Or maybe this was bike that first hooked me:

Not even sure what make it is.

I had a red KZ650B1 when I was in grade 12, hooked me for life. My bike was my only mode of transportation for 4 years, and then my car even took a back seat to her whenever it was not snowing. She's gone through some changes in the intervening 9 years, but I hope to ride her again soon and we'll have many more good years together.

When I was a kid I first had a Sears 2.5hp Mini bike. But the Bike that hooked me was a 1971 Yamaha JT1 60cc Mini Enduro! Got that for Christmas when I was 10, that was the time, gas was almost free back then. A kid could turn in a couple of Pop bottles and get Gas money. I used to ride and ride and ride that little bike till I out grew it. Had a string of Yammies after that, LT2 100 was next, CT1 175, IT 175, 83 IT 250K only bike I ever bought brand new.

This picture is not of mine, but from the web.

kzjoe,
i'm thinkin the old bike is an ariel.

the bike that "hooked me"has to be the first brown and orange 73 z1 that my dad had.
watching him drag race on the street in front of our house was pretty heady stuff for an impressionable kid.

Leon,

Sorry, didn't want to hi-jack the topic here. But just a quick response. I think you are close. I was thinking the following:

1951 Ariel Square 4, The head looks big like the one in the picture I posted (must be taken in 1961). I think these were 1000 cc push rod type square four cylinder engines. Even though it has one exhaust showing, the exhaust manifold was built right into the head.

Edit: My bad on the above guess, more likely its similar to this BSA M20 or M21.

Once again, sorry to get off topic.
