I think I read somewhere that all the stock ones are brass, but some of them are (zinc-??) plated - they'll be the ones you've had.

The earliest versions were chrome plated brass.  I think that went away in 1977, though.

Choke plungers? I have only seen brass. Slides I have seen chrome.

Yes, choke plungers.  They are silver colored, but non magnetic.  Zed confirmed that they are chrome plated brass.

Slides are all aluminum.  Anodized either gold or silver.  No chrome plated VM slides.  Maybe some other brands, though.

Well I’ll be, thank you, I have not seen chrome plated plungers. Yes I knew there were different colored slides, I misspoke on their finish. My dad always said “ If ya ain’t carful you’ll learn something new everyday ”.

While I'm waiting for the carb dip I decided I should get around to painting the brake rotors. Then I can just put everything together when I get back from my trip home over Christmas. Still need to order the rebuild kits for the master cylinders and calipers, but they have been put aside for me so there will be a nice pile of stuff to assemble when I get back.

It's about 5°C out in the carport so it was slow going with the spray gun. I got through it without any major incidents - just a bit of pooling on the back of one of the discs. Pretty sure you'll need a torch to see it when the discs are back on the bike.

Still waiting for them to dry enough take the masking off:

Mounting surfaces are all masked up. No worries there.

Bought them inside out of the cold - paint was never gonna dry outside. You can see some pooling on the mounting surfaces. They were facing down when I left them to dry and the paint stayed wet for too long. When it's this cold it's so hard to get enough paint on for a decent finish and not have it run. Thankfully none of it will be visible when I get them bolted to the wheels.

Can anyone tell me the width and spacing of the stripes on the KZ1000A1 tank and tail? Going to have a go at masking the stripes instead of using decals and need to know what width pinstripe tape to get.

For some reason unknown to me, my A1 (which I bought used in 1979) came with A2 livery. It has always been registered as black, so I'm guessing it was probably done at the dealership to move old stock. The stripes are rounded, so I'm afraid I can't help here.

Back in the saddle and loving it! KZ1000A1

Yeah, there's no way I'd be trying this on an A2 ;) definitely be getting decals for that.

Made a little bit of progress since I got back, got a new propane heater so should be in the garage a bit more over the next few weeks. Wanted to get the bike started at the end of the month but still no sign of the carb parts I sent off to get plated, so it will be a few more weeks...
Have been working on the brakes - no pictures though as the light in the garage has been bad. I have pretty much sworn off powder coating after all of the sanding I have had to do to get things to fit. The last bit was on the brake caliper mounts. The pads didn't fit in the cutout so the coating had to go. I'm a bit worried it might rust now - although it should get coated in brake dust pretty quickly which might protect it. I guess I'll pull them apart next winter and see how they look after a season.
