I think I may have put too much oil in them, I measured the oil when I filled them using amount quoted in the workshop manual BUT I think it was for different forks, the manual shows forks with the threaded caps mine has the caps held in with circlips. Does anyone know how much oil should go in each leg?

Looked a the KZ440 manual and those are the same as on my KZ400 with the circlips, so I drained them and refilled with 120ml and it feels a lot better. Now to sort the rear although it does seem a bit better now I've put a few miles on her. The Hogan shocks are £146 or £206 with damping adjustment.
Hogan shocks? Is that a new brand (maybe from China)?    I use Hagon shocks and they work really well. Ed

Or am I asking too much, it rides great on the road and the bike as never built for off-road use so I might just live with it!
