The approximate alloying composition of 531 tubing is 1.5% Mn, 0.25% Mo, 0.35% C.
Its mechanical properties and response to heat treatment are broadly similar to the AISI 4130 standard alloy steel, also used for bicycle frames, among other applications.

so for us yanks it is close to 4130 chrom-moly.

lookin good, you got some nice bits there.those dymags are yummy  .

keep us posted,

Yes! Anyone know if the "new" Dymags are made well? I'd love to get my hands on a set, but they're rare and not cheap, almost worth the cash to buy new if they are still built well.

Nice build.

Saw this Harris framed Z racing at Mosport a few years back, until it's alternator fried:

Cool project. I don't know what happened to the original thread, cus I think I posted in that one too. Anyway, I find it interesting to note a cultural difference in fabrication techniques. Notice the brazed engine lugs where here in the colonies we would only consider welding.

Pigford, do you have any idea if the Reynolds 531 used in this frame is butted as it would be for a bicycle frame? The butting is part of the reason why this material is so well renowned in the bicycle frame building community. It lends a certain "feel" that is not possible with constant wall thickness tubing. Also makes it much lighter that straight walled steel tubes as well.

I can't wait to see this one come together.

Testarossa - I believe the tubes are very carefully cut in jigs to fit real tight, then brazed, but I'm no expert

Jeff - :P No probs matey - I only posted how much I spent coz personally I find it interesting what the prices of stuff is - helps compare - I didn't mean to come over as a "show-off"
No hard feelings mate.

So, I got the sprox carrier from Talon - so the chain run is now straight :woohoo:

Before:

After:

It does look a little "fugly" but its light & tuff - I can always get some holes in it at a later date.

The front is a 5/8" off-set with a snub-nose for the out rigger bearing.....

January 2012 Classic Motorcyle Mechanics mag has a great story on a Harris framed Z, same owner for 30 years. Very nice bike, great mag.

EDIT: Even though I just picked it up off the shelf at Chapters, turns out it's from January 2011. Sorry about that....

OT: So how did that pan out for ya? :woohoo:

Pigford: Love the build, it's gonna be intresting to follow. And by the way, I love the UK bike-magazines, I subscribe to CMM/Classic Bike/Practical Sportsbike...there isn't anything close to the quality of these magazines in Sweden :pinch:
