Funny you should mention the battery cut off switch. I did order the Battery Tender Jr last night. I also saw a cut off when I picked up some wiring supplies for my new lights.
I added 2 of these ledoutfitters.com/index.php?target=products&product_id=117 in blue/red today. I moved my 2 sem3 lights to the front at a 45 deg to aid in intersection approach.
I don't know if there is a battery draw to anything with the switch off. But I still like the idea of the cutoff. I also like the idea of a complete rewire, but don't think I'm ready for that yet.
The HID light system looks pretty cool, but I think I would be better off with the LED headlamp due to the low draw. Between the cell going bad and the low rpms I travel at when using the bike, I think the battery was at a disadvantage. The other battery had been jumped off, drained dead, overcharged, and just abused while I was trying to figure out the charging issue.
Funny thing: I would ride it, have to roll it off to get home, charge it until the next ride, and then do it all again. It took a while to realize the replacement stator had broke a wire when I installed it. Very irritating.

Nice bike. I'm liking the paintjob. The radio box (I think that's what it is) being black seems to give it a lower profile. I like the look of yours better than the other 2 in your pic, but I do love me some old KAW's

always liked the kz1000p's too. picked this one up about a month ago. ex orlando pd bike, 12,000 miles.on a one to ten its an honest nine, very nice. everything still hooked up and working. got a motorcycle mechanic buddy of mine who's out of work and he went over the bike for $160.00! cleaned the carbs, flushed the brakes, got the blue lights working. still needs a rebuild kit in the petcock, he tried cleaning it up but still leaks. nice riding bike.
cool as hell, going to be a nice nice cold weather rig.

Here are before and after pics of my '81 C4 model. former Bridgeton PD cruiser. I got it with only 11,400 miles on it when i picked it up... In Missouri, you can't have the Police markings on the bike except the side cover decal because that is the model number sticker. you can't have the blue and red lights either as far as I understand, although I see some bikes set up for escort that have them. Mine is a daily rider and runs strong. The electrical system after thirty years is quite fragile and requires a lot of TLC until I can get it re wired.

Sir your bike looks great. Nice use of the ride as well. I went the other way with my 81-P but I still have all the parts to get her back to factory spec, even decals. Maybe one day.

Around here you aren't allowed to have anything which says police (impersonating an officer), or a siren or blue lights on any vehicle.
i bought the bike from a detective in a rural mo. town. you have to remove the police emblems but the lights and siren can remain intact. just can't use 'em. another poster in mo. stated the blue and red lights have to be removed, so i guess its subject to debate.

I have been considering picking up a set of these bags:
www.ridebikegear.com/ga-series-hard-saddlebags-p-198.html
They look like a direct replacement (other than the obvious hump on top). Some fitting will be required. My bags are as watertight as the Titanic and have cracks and other damage
On the related topic of making the bike better, I ordered the HID conversion headlamp from Otakar. I went with his light vs the all-LED version. The LED was $250+ and Otakar's was $75 less with shipping included. The kit should be here around Wed, can't wait to get it installed.

As to the question about legality of running a police bike with working red/blue emergency equipment...
I would err on the side of caution and remove the lights. If you are LEO, then by all means, keep them if you are so inclined.
However, if you ride a bike that looks like a "po-lice" bike, then you are presumed to be a LEO. Which means that you are also presumed to be armed and have a badge. There are those that don't like police, and if you aren't in uniform, not wearing your body armor, then you won't be carrying your radio so that you can call other officers who will be armed and wearing body armor to get your ass out of a jam.....
I would not have the lights on it, nor would I have "police" anywhere on the bike if I were not LEO.
That being said, if a person does not make a overt act as if they were LEO (such as attempting to make a traffic stop or block traffic, etc) then keeping the lights as a "parade" function may be permissible. YOU MUST CHECK YOUR LOCAL LAWS BEFORE KEEPING YOUR LIGHTS!!! (here ends liability notice)

I added new LED lights to both sides of the front fairing and also moved my smaller led lights to a 45 deg angle. I also installed Otakar's HID kit
