Before you start doing enything else... GET A SERVICE MANUAL.
...get a compression guage on the engine, and determine the condition of it first. You could be spending well into the $1000 + range, just to freshen up a beat to crap motor.
Starting with all the other crap is not necessary.
Rust is not a good indicator for engine internals...
Good luck.

Well, that's it for now. I got ignition coils on the way. Next step will be a compression test as I havn't done that yet. Hope my broke azz slow progress doesn't drive you guys crazy. Thanks to all for knowledge and info.
Ignition coils on the way... Have you checked the condition of the origional coils? Plug wires/plug caps, plugs, wiring, points/pickups, condensors...?
Don;t get too far ahead of yourself or you'll be dumping $$$$ for no reason.

you may have a big bore...and i don't think most folks get the bike.or keep the bike running long enough to hurt the greater majority of these things...i have raised many idiot owned kz's that were on the verge of a tow away from the fools ashes and ridden them hard as hell once gotten on the rode...and never had one of probably 10-15 fail ...it takes a water in the motor season or a fire to put a Z down...think positive and stay on target...the more pics is see the more i like...you def got something to work with......you may even have a neglected ripper in the rough there....go tight and go right and shoot for clean work and clean finishes on the little stuff ,do like guys here and get one thing right ,clean,no matter the expense to a point, and the big picture shines nice in the end every time..it's only money and you got a muscle bike head turner, before you know it....you wont regret getting the correct stuff in the end imo.good thoughts your way

A good 90% of the Z1, KZ900, 77/78kZ100 are all the same in design... Sure there are some differences here and there but this will help you out tremendously....
