I would do some research on the coils before you buy new ones. In the dyna literature, I read you can remove the ballast resistor and use 3 ohm coils. So if you have a decent set of 3 ohm coils get rid of the ballast resistor and use them. I will try and find that info for you.

i was just gonna get a set of green 3 ohm dynas...are those the 3 ohm you refer to?
i have extra mismatch coils laying around but figured on just buying dynas and removing the balast as you note...seems the stock ic ignitor and elec ignition will work fine with the dynas ....it is almost a tie trying to buy stock 79 coils or used dyna greens -as it is to just get a new set of dyna 3 ohm greens on an auction sale...
thanks for all your help.....time to clean and organize the shop and see where i'm at...i got stuff piled and messed pretty good....no fun working on bike when it's not organized imo....

Craig, It looks like when I merged the two together it places all the posts by date so some of the posts are out of order. If you don't like it let me know and I'll put it back the way it was.

thanks Tony,
this'l be my build thread so move it/merge it, it's all good....
gonna get the bike on the bench saturday and see what ignition sytem it has under the timing cover ,and try and do the valves and carbs too....i may try and put the bowls from a set of extra kz900 26mm on the pumpers and eliminmate the pumer circuits.....we'll see ...may not need to...also i wanna check and see if it will electric start with the headlight fuse taken out, if it still wont crank start after the carbs and valves...it may need a fresh battery.....i wish i could just put an earlier kz1000 right throttle swith housing and get back to having a headlight switch.......anybody done this to full time headlighted kz before?

anyone ever used or checked into these newer type dyna 3 ohm coils...seems to be okay for me to run right?
I'm going with a new set anyways...wether i go "green" dynas or thses should not matter aye?

It's all about the ohms. Specific ignitions can only handle so much current, so the coils you put on there can burn out the igition. I can't remember for sure, so don't quote me, but I think the stock electronic ignition needs at least 3 ohms to be safe. The stock coils are less, so the resistor is added. When you replace the coils with higher ohm units, the resistor can be removed.
I like those new coils - I was just too afraid to try something so new - I don't know anyone that has used them.

I almost bought those coils instead of the dyna greens, then realized they wouldn't work with a dyna S. If the 79 is factory electronic ignition, it should work for you......hell, who am I kidding, I don't know!
