1973 Z1 rebuild

My strategy of ringing the electroplaters every week finally paid off - the chrome plating is done !  

 

First thing I did was bolt on the triple tree top bolt.  I had to clean up the alloy headlight brackets (non standard) and give them a coat of paint and then got the gauges out gave them a clean up and bolt them on as eventually the wiring loom is going to start heading that way.  Might need a new backing plate for them - it never ends.

Nice looking chrome!  Kawasaki chrome was never that good.

I am pleasantly surprised with the chrome, the chromeplaters are all very busy (my brother had to wait nearly a year to get 2 bumpers re chromed last year) so I went to a small family owned business (that I have used before for zinc plating and polishing)  If I had gone to one of the big places it would have taken twice as long and cost twice as much.

I went to the bike shop and picked up some stuff - got a battery (will need to start testing stuff as the loom and switchblocks go back together) and some engine and fork oil.
We are going away for the long weekend so the bike has got its fluffy sheets on for a little while.

 

Starter relay question - does it matter which terminal the battery positive lead and the starter lead goes to on the starter relay ?

That’s correct is doesn’t matter. I would look at mounting. If mounting a positive lead would put it near a grounded bolt I’d pick the opposite. The solenoid when energized is changing the large lugs from open to closed, making the connection.

I went to the Kawasaki dealer and this is what they talked me into - it does have terminals on both sides so that makes it easier to fit
