Well, fingers crossed, the tank fix seems to have worked. At least,no apparent flooding so far. Glorious weather here at the moment,so I took the bike out for a spin. The clutch is still being a bastard (Thats next on my list )and the oil light is coming on.and off and on. It seems to be only on idle and when I give a bit of throttle it goes off again.I looked in the Clymer and cant find mention of how to test the pressure switch.Anybody got any idea?

On the 750/4 the switch is under the ignition cover but I think on the 1000 it is behind the cylinders near the cam chain tensioner. However, if there is a single wire attached then the following procedure for the 750/4 may work for you. I have had oil light problems in the past which were resolved by cleaning the contacts.

PS. Great looking bike !

Yes JR,the switch is behind the cylinders and it has a single wire feed. Ill have a go at the 750/4 method. I had another look in the Clymer and it shows how to check the oil pressure ( a port at the base of the No.4 cylinder,it seems, where an oil pressure gauge can be fitted.) I dont have an oil pressure gauge. Ill have to wait til next week and go talk to my local bike shop.
Hopefully it is just an electrical fault. Thanks for the input boys.

Heyho. Been a while I know. In the meantime,I found a 2nd hand tranny cover, bought new oil seals and a gasket and got that fitted. I also bit the bullet and took the bike to my local shop to sort out the bastard clutch. The good news is that it seems to work but I need the grip of a teenager without a girlfriend to pull the lever in! The mechanic reckons its an old bike so its got to be expected but I dont buy that for a minute. Or the plates and springs are aftermarket (Toumax) and the dimensions might be slightly off, which makes more sense. Or, new springs will take a while to soften up!!!!!
Next thing is to pull the fucker apart again and refit all the old plates and springs and see what that does. Ill let you know.

I think you are absolutely right to doubt the clutch diagnosis you got.

The only thing I could find on the oil pressure sender, is this----

1981 KZ1000 LTD awaiting resurrection
2000 ZRX1100 not ridden enough

Thanks Texas KZ,The oil switch is sorted. It was an electrical fault. All good there now. The leaking fuel is also sorted, albeit the cowboy way ( inline on/off switch) the clutch is the only thing holding me back from fully enjoying the bike. I shall overcome!!!

I just spent the last few hours reading this entire thread and find that is one very interesting build (not my style but I love the workmanship that has gone into it) and I hope you get everything sorted soon, keep us up to speed on it.

Thanks for that Bruce,a lot of work to read through the whole thread. Be careful though, reading through other peoples build threads is what finally prompted me to start my own!! You have been warned.

Spring seems to have sprung here in the lowlands. A cracking day today. I didnt put the bike in storage this winter, its just been sitting outside on the street, under an overhang on the building next door,so, out of the rain but exposed to everything else. Today was cleaning day ( #1) . A good scrub behind the ears. The worst affected was the exhaust. a second hand 1980s job that I got off ebay. The chrome was already a bit pitted and worn in places and the top of the down pipes where they fit into the head, have no chrome. The rust was really starting to blossom, so that got a good polish. It came up ok. Tomorrow,I want to pull the downpipes off and give them a good going over. I cant get at everything when its on the bike. The paint seems to be holding up really well ( My first attempt at painting) and a bit of Turtle wax brought that up lovely. Very happy with it. The powder coating on the wheels and swingarm looks good with no chips or bubbles. The engine is a real mess though. The engine cases are oxidizing and the PJ1 is knackered.Apart from the mess where fuel took it off, theres a small oil weep from the head ( I think) and thats taken more paint off. The rest has oxidation showing through. Itll be a repaint this summer im afraid.
Other than that, its not looking bad at all (especially for a bike thats sat outside all winter). A bit more cleaning tomorrow and that should be it sorted. Oh and it started up no problem.
