First off........I'm not an engineer nor do I play one on T.V.

BUT.......... drilling holes as you have most likely weakened the swing arm greatly.

If you had ran a weld bead around the top outer ring of plug, I would feel better about the insert.

I would watch for any stress cracks coming from holes. Just an observation?

Yeah, I thought long and hard about it before I did it. It's pretty thick steel and is fully boxed....plus I don't ride to crazy these days. It's been good for a few years now but I'll keep an eye on it. I'm sure it weakened it some, but hopefully not enough to make a difference in the real world.

the strength of the arm is primarily in the vertical walls of the tube.
you didn't weaken the arm enough by drilling those two holes to ever make a difference.
they'll never crack out either,we use those rivnuts in industrial applications holding much more than that swingarm with no failures.

Kitten tooth, you talking about my build? Lol, thanks! I appreciate it.
Also, I may be mistaken but putting a bolt in that hole if there is a tight fit wouldn't it take up the slack? I dunno. I'm thinking of doing a custom chain guard that somehow will be done with a clamp or epoxy. I plan on beating the shit out of her when I ride. That is the last of my worries for the moment. I want to clean up and coat the front calipers or do a brembo brake mod in which case new rotors, etc. So damned close but I have such a bad case of ADD right now. I have to spend but it "ADDS" up and the sum is more than my funds are available at the moment.

She looks great saxjonz. Nice paint job. Looking forward to the chain guard.

I know it's been a long time but shortly it's gonna be finished AT LONG LAST!!!! I have been working on the hydra clutch. Shaved two mm from the clutch rod, was still too long. Tomorrow gonna finish shaving it and measuring the lines and ordering the lines so with just a few more things it will be completed for the time being.

Actually the opposite, most of the strength is in the top and bottom of the box section, the sides just hold the top and bottom together. Look at the design of a steel beam, either for a point load or bending moment,

Attachment srrt.jpg not found

The strength is a function of the distance of the top and bottom from the axis centreline. Note the h variable is cubed. Better to increase the depth of the box section then using thicker walls.

So yes you have weakened it, in my opinion. But I wouldn't worry, in reality box section arms aren't to prevent breakage , it is to make them more rigid with less flex, so they are quite a bit stronger in yield strength than they need to be. A better plan would be to have attached at the inside on the centreline.

Nice build by the way, :)

I have a thought of what I will use as far as mounting the brake line but I am not too sure if it would be a functional idea. I measured the front lines so that is all good, just have to order them. As far as the back line goes I came up with 34" more or less. I'm not sure exactly where to lay that line out yet. I have a two inch over swingarm with the hanger on the bottom instead of on top. Does that sound about right or am I way off? I would like to see some pics of how that played out on you guys' stretched arms.

Here's how mine ended up...it's strapped near the master cylinder and behind the rear shock. I can't remember if I added any other straps to the swingarm but I always wanted to do something there. I can't remember the length of the line though! :S

The only issue I could see is if something were to hit it. Out here we have rocks and things, plus I like to go off the road from time to time. Everything on my bike is well off the ground.
