Valve spring compressor? (For pre-J 1000) was created by GPzMOD750
I'm rebuilding the top end of my 79 shaft and I want to replace the valve oil seals. What spring compressor set up works best to get the valves in and out? I was looking for some this weekend but I'm not sure if any type will work or if there is a particular type I need.
I'm using a 78 head if that matters. The price was right and it neatly eliminates the MKII smog features. 77 cover as well.

I use a C clamp and modified socket.

The clamp type was the one I was looking for but couldn't find one locally.

I'm listening. What size clamp and how do you modify the socket?swest wrote: I use a C clamp and modified socket.

8" C clamp with the sides of the socket cut out. I've used a piece of PVC too but you have to use a deep socket to break free the keepers then the PVC to remove them.

So basically emulating these.
Valve Spring Compressor Pincer 10" www.amazon.com/dp/B00BJS7GH2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_g-BvxbB3T05QT
8milelake Valve Clamps Spring Compressor Automotive Tool Set Repair Tool www.amazon.com/dp/B01CQGZHY4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_qiCvxb5FHAVRY
My favorite just cause they are for a HD. Love the seller's use name.
Harley Valve Spring Compressor www.amazon.com/dp/B019RWIQKM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_WkCvxb56RGE0G
For $20 I'll just order one and not waste my time doing a bunch of grinding and fiddling.

That $18.50 jobby should work fine. I used a C-clamp from Harbor Freight and a PVC chunk with a window but I like the real spring compressor deal better.
