Dealers may have checked torque at the 500 mile oil change if the bike came back to them.   I've seen nothing in the manuals about checking valve clearance at that point.  As far as I know, and I've only done two '78 KZ650 engines there are no head bolts under the valve cover.  Also, the head gasket is a one piece.  In this respect a Z1R (1015 cc) engine is different.  It also has valve shims on top of the tappets wheras the '78 650 engine has them under the tappets.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Not really head nuts but there are two 6mm's in the cam tunnel. One at the front and one at the back. They are not big enough to affect overall head "tightness" but the head won't come off without removing them.

I have to go back and check.  I don't remember putting those bolts in either of my 650 engines!

Yeah, I went back and checked on Partzilla before my last post.  What I meant was that I have to check my engines to see if I installed those bolts.  I don't remember if I did.

I would have expected there to be some oil sweating around the joint if you hadn't

You've not done a job right unless there's a couple of bolts left over when it's all back together.

As mentioned, on the later bikes those bolts are stretch to yield.  When building my 750, they wouldn't take the rated torque, so I stopped turning before they broke.  Given this, maybe they should be left alone on the later bikes?  I can certainly imagine a good intended, but less experienced mechanic, would cheese off some of these using a torque wrench.
