My only issue with your method is it places the threads in bearing, albeit inside a spacer and not directly in the shock mount. You would need to make a round jig with a bushing to keep the drill and tap straight and centered.

you are correct sir.
mine are spaced out with some aluminum spacers i machined out and some thin steel sleeves over the threads that came with my progressive shocks.
they have been fine for a few thousand miles so far,and works well enough i haven't done anything better  .

i went one step further and slotted the bottom of my aluminum spacers so i could remove them without removing my shocks.
soooo  ,
i could use the space for the front mount of my custom luggage rack i built.
it attachs to the shock studs by some slotted spacers welded to the front of the rack and machined out spacers that fit the turnsignal mount holes and countersunk allen heads through the backside.

Perfect! Yes I need that. I checked now a new problem which freaked me out for a second. So using that trick, that worked for the shifter side but when I placed the rear brake side shock in the same spot it was diagonal this way "/". So I was like shit is my rear tire not center?? Then I made a few measurements and its right on the laser from the rear goes right up the center of the frame tube, few! Then I measured the swing arm is wider on the shifter side by 1.5" roughly.
So it looks like now I need one normal and one positive 1.5" offset shock mount in order to keep the shocks in the same place frame wise. Fak. :pinch:
I'm hoping that positive offset side doesn't inter fear with the exhaust but I have a feeling it will.
PS unrelated updates:
I'm painting this weekend, priming at minimum. Hopefully going to get the base coat too.
I finally figured out what I am going to do with the wheels as well, it's gonna be super cool.
I made new gas tank mounts.
My venom bike stands for the front and rear came in.
My oil cooler came in but its too small.
I ordered the aluminium for the foot peg mounts.

I know...
I keep telling myself "but it's gonna look good, it's worth it"... But it kinda isnt. lol. It should be on the list of what not to buy for a kz swap.
Here is my custom gas tank rests. Rather than shave the stock rubber I took apart two of the old kz shock mounts. The metal shock insert fits nicely on the frame, then I took the rubber grommet from the shock mount that holds it in the eye of the shock and trimmed and sanded it down.

Also tackled the brakes. Sanded and primed the rotors. Prepped and cleaned calipers. Customized brake bolts.
