Regarding your budget cuts...you gotta do what you gotta do. Get it on the road and update as you can. Can't remember if you mentioned it, but is your current crank welded? I would get that done before bolting up the bottom end and then you can go as big as you want on top at some point later without having to open up the bottom end again. Just a thought...

No Mike, my crank isn't welded. I was talking with plummen about trading some composite tails for one of his welded Z1 cranks a few months ago, but I don't have any tails yet, and we didn't discuss the option of an outright purchase. So, unless a welded crank drops in my lap (I'm not entirely comfortable buying a welded used crank off of ebay) I'm just gonna stick the stocker back in. At some point the engine will come back apart for a welded Z1 crank and back cut gears.

I like the new plan Adam. You can always buy another motor and build it on the side. That way, you are only down for a day when you do the swap. Or just get everything together and ready to go. Then pull your motor and it shouldn't take too long to swap all the parts. Maybe your down for a week. Either way, I'm stoked to see you making decisions that get the bike closer to being done. Where's the thumbs up smilie?

I did get the MKII cams too. Again, I just assumed they were the same parts as the standard Kz1000 and wasn't too concerned about whether I got them or not.

Doubledub, I thought you might have been referencing the J head ;)

Joe, my current avatar picis the same mock up pic I posted a page or two ago. I didn't take any pics of the left side of the bike, but I will......some day :P The bike is stripped back down to the bare frame/subframe so that I can finish the subframe brackets. When my replacement welder shows up (hopefully some time this month) I'll go over all my mig welds with a tig torch to clean them up and illuminate any weld defects.

for what it is worth ...imo....in your area there are some smokin deals 1-2 times a year on built bikes....you could pop the motor out and take any goodies you desired and then pop the unbuilt motor back in +any parts you borrowed ,donated from your stock kz1000 leftovers......and throw a new eye catcher coat of paint and clean up the paperwork...make 500 on top of getting a 1260cc or 1045cc already built engine ect.....

A good majority of built motors come with documentation and receipts and are driven a few hundred miles and then put in a corner of the garage....

Early this year there was a beefed up gpz 81 with aftermarket rims and swingarm...and cr smoothies and stainless lines, corbin seat, and one over with cams and welded crank.....it was relisting over,,,and over...and over...3 ...then 2500....last i saw he was asking 2200 i think......

you score something like that and already have yours riding....the conversion/swaps could go smooth and re-list it ........

a motor is 3-7000 to build when you match the right carbs and pipe to it imo....all areas built and refurbed

That would be a good plan Craig. I will focus on getting my engine reassembled, painting the frame and assembling the basic components. Then I can put the battery/electronics area together, all the while working on the bodywork. During that time I will do a bit of looking at paint and get some for experimentation with the translucent Z1B paint scheme. Once it's on the road, I'll turn my attention toward aquiring the remaining parts I wanted.
Motorsports, boats and aircraft are nearly always negative investments. I discovered a while ago it is far cheaper to buy what you want than to build it......if you build it and sell, you rarely recover your investment.

if you sell it......thats the key words....if you keep it, now thats what makes it worth while.
