One benefit to being a newbie is that this isn't a chore yet, it's kind of fun and exciting if you can believe that!

Before I go taking the head apart again to helicoil it up, I took some pics of my cam sprockets to make sure I had them set right.
I spun the crank around many times hoping to get the exhaust arrow pointing perfect, but it always came out like this...if I go a tooth lower it is WAY off. The pic makes it look a little higher than it is, but it is perfectly flat, and the arrow is maybe 1 mm above the edge of the head.
The intake cam is counted 44 pins from the pin above the EX arrow, and lines up nicely with the head edge.
Are these cams set up ok?

@ 28th tooth counts, count one up from the Intake dimple /arrow aligned with the head decking to the exhaust dimple/arrow! ... Your cam lobes should be the same as in this image, right side of the bike cylinder 4, lobes are facing each other and aligned with head decking....
Don't forget, also rotate for 1/4 TDC for this alignment!

Excerpts out of my manual, seems to be the same cam sprockets as in your images...
At TDC for 1/4 pistons, insure the intake/exhaust arrows are positioned as in depicted in 2-7 #1 drawing.
Then in rotation of the crank, your cam sprocket arrows should match depictions in 2-7 #2- #4 drawings.
As for lobe orientations, I would think they should match as well... Sorry, don't have a J-head for confirmations but I'm sure Plum, TB33 or some others can chime in for confirmations....
Keep at bud....

dave, how do you post pics from the manual like that? I have an e-manual at work for my bike and can't figure out how to post stuff. I have a full version of acrobat....
Easy...
1) Open the pdf in what ever application...
Got to what ever page and +/- zoom of the pdf
what you want to capture.
2) Then on key board, press Print Screen Key....
This screen captures into clipboard memory.
3) In Paint or Photo Shop whatever application, paste.
Clipboard screen capture pasted...
4) Edit size, red boxes, Text whatever...
5) Save as Jpg (smaller size then bmp format) for
posting in KZR....
Same with video... Example you-tube screeny...
Print screen key then paste into jpeg Paint application...
See, simple!

Interesting, my 81-83 Manual (J Head) doesn't even mention tooth count, only cam sprocket arrow to head deck alignments... Hmmm.... Maybe just the way it works out on the counts....

That's my manual, I would post a pic with my newly acquired posting skillz, but I only have a real manual at home (not at work today look at pages 6-19 and 6-20 for what I am talking about...

Done the same by imaging the manual page (zoom, no flash) with my camera and download into the computer... Edit in Paint app... Same results!
Just a thought...
When your all done, image your lobe orientations (right side of bike) for crank rotations as depicted in 2-7 #1-4 for future reference and for others to follow...
