did you have to cut the bearings slightly, or switch the steering stem over or what to make the front end fit?

mono conversion on shaft drive was created by high toned son of a bitch

Ok,
I picked up a shock for my mono conversion. The only thing is, is that this will be on my shaft drive bike. The shock is off of a 96 FZR. It has the lower linkage on it, and a remote resivoir. I have the bike stripped to the bare frame, and have a few ways to try and make this work.

On the stock shaft drive swingarm, it has some very thin bracing in the front, right where monoshock would be. It is like stamped sheetmetal. I think I can cut it out if I reinforce it with some thicker strips instead of the stamped piece.

Anyways, I was looking at the post about the gentleman with the GSXR swingarm conversion (just a few down from this post), and that is about the same type of shock and lower linkage setup as what I have.
Sorry if I am unclear on the names of the parts, Obviously there is the shock, then the aluminum "rocker arm thingy", and the two thinner pieces that hold it all steady.

Assume on my ideas here that I have unlimited clearance in the frame (except of course where the engine will be)

The simpelest solution would be to weld a bar across the frame up by the tank, put two tabs on it and mount the top of the shock up there. Then weld a piece across the swingarm, put two tabs on it, and mount the bottom of the shock there. This would limit me to about 2" of shock travel, as I would only be using the shock, not any of the linkage stuff.

Next would be to cut out the stamped steel piece in the swingarm, and mount the shock how the previously discussed poster:blush: did his. Is there any rhyme or reason on how to set up the linkage stuff on the bottom of the shock?

Lastly would be to mount it under the bike, but my last post about that left me just about as unclear on how to do it than before I posted it.
Is it possible or should I forget about that?

I understand that most of you guys are doing this to chain drive bikes with different swingarms, but I cannot do anything about that. I really would like to do it to this bike. Not so much for balls to the walls handeling performance, but more for looks and the cool factor. I am a great welder and have the necessary tools for the task, just not all the knowledge. I am not looking for someone to hold my hand, just kinda point me in the right direction:)

THanks,
Mike

It's all for now anyways. Most of the flex on these frames is in the steering head and, as wireman posted, the swingarm.
Remember that the kosman kit is designed for dragracing where they run much bigger engines (like wireman's) that put way more stress on the frame. I think wiredgeorge has posted a picture of a (very similar) japanese bracing kit before, it kinda shows you where the pieces would go. I just didn't think it was really necessary with my stock engine. I can always add more later, but really don't think I will at this point. I would get more results out of a swingarm and frontend swap at this point. With the mods so far, I drop a lot easier into corners and the only wobble I feel is on high speed, tight or crowned corners, in the rear. I am running a stock swingarm and shocks, so a GS or GPZ swingarm and some better shocks are an option.

like i mentioned. my shock is darn near straight up. so this gives me a firm to rough ride. it is really stiff.

but i have a really sticky tire is the rear (racing tire rear and front) so i like this set up for me. i would recomend tilting it forward a bit.

Thanks. I was able to clean up the mounts and tack them up to day.
SBjones, do you have any pics of how you mounted your rear shock? I bought the bearing from Jeff at Z1 Engineering.

looks pretty good. if you want a softer ride. then mount the rear spring leaning slightly forward like two wheeled terror. if you would like a firmer ride. then mount it more straight up and down. that is what i did. i would recomend tilting it forward slightly.

mine is straight up and down. i have a swing arm off a 03 gixxer also.. i am mounting 2001 gixxer front forks on. but i like my ride stiffer than most people.

what size bearings did you use to mount your front forks on ? what numbers did you use and where did you get them from please.

Looking good! I think you know what you're doing. do the gixxer forks lower the front any? that should quicken the steering too right?

very nice, do you have any other pics of your rear suspension setup?

I am now also trying to decide what the best method would be to make the top support. I think I am going to start with a 2x2x1/2 plate. I need to see it to visualize how to support it.

I was thinking either 4 pieces of 1" frame tubing with a little bend going down to the plate from above. or If I should just box it in with angle for the battery to be right above it.

I dont really want to use a side cover. So I want to make it look nice and clean. But I do need a place for the battery and other electric goodies!

Oh and Biquetoast sorry missed your ?

I pressed out the pivot rod on the stock kz lower tree, and made a adapter to fit it in the gsxr lower tree. Then I had to bore the top tree to fit the larger rod. That was it. As long as you have access to a lathe/mill and a press , its easy.
