Air Box Plastic Adhesive?
20 Feb 2017 06:16
Looking to remodel my air box, and butt-join the modified pieces tightly back together, with neat/clean joints.
Is there an inexpensive (simple to use) adhesive suitable for the material?

Not with that kind of plastic. It has to be fused together.

The airbox is polyethylene or polypropylene or something similar. It's not easy to bond that stuff. Google has some suggestions you might want to check out such as...

Harbor Freight sells a plastic welding kit, but reviews are not totally great (but not totally bad either).

3M has a product...but it is NOT cheap.
I hope to make one widened air box (from two) to accept 70mm long velocity stacks straight off the carbs, or Pipercross foam filters with shorter stacks, fit into oval shaped holes in the air box face. It would still look stock, having the original chrome covers and frame-attachment fittings for support.

Well so much for Amazon having this. Sounds pretty good!
Might have been from a member 2 years ago. Or even Nels The new Vapor Blasting restorer?
Might be worth a look and searching for it?

Forging (rather cutting) ahead...
Have yet to resolve my bondage issue, but will have something figured out when the time comes.
As of now, I plan to remove the existing interior structure to create a large opening to the filter area.

Hello again Daveo, I have used the Harbor Freight ELECTRIC plastic welding unit with much success P/N 67102 $16.99. It comes with a chart for different materials and filler sticks for each type. They also separately sell a black plastic welding stick that is reinforced. This is a flat stick that looks like beef Jerky lol. Very useful. Harbor Freight also sells a propane plastic welding tool that I haven't used. The electric one works very well. I have also taken a 1/4 inch bolt and ground the end into a V shape for opening up a nice groove to fill. Let me know if you need more info. Good luck, jon

Whatever method you use.You can add strength by sewing the pieces together with thin wire.

You can pop rivet a plate for your new holes then plastic weld the cracks. Looks like you will have plenty of same material to work with.

Are you suggesting that I can utilize plastic from the junked air box to weld the ends to the modded one?
