Chem srip on fiberglass ??

I sent this fender to one of our members that wants to paint it black, & he asked me if I thought if he could remove the paint with Chem strip
I told him I havn't got a clue, any suggestions ??

1980 LTD 1000..,1976 LTD 900, have the 1000&900 now. the rest are previous= 1978 KZ 650 B.., 1980 Yamaha XT 500..,1978 Yamaha DT 400.., 1977 Yamaha yz 80..,Honda trail ct 70.., Honda QA 50...5-1/2 hp brigs & straton CAT chopper mini bike...3-1/2 hp mini bike (WHEN GAS WAS ABOUT 45 CENTS A GALLON)!!!!

Negative on the paint stripper. It will eat into the resin binding the fender together.

I would just sand it down, that will also give it a good surface for the paint to adhere to. The original paint looks fairly decent so it might not even need to be completely removed, getting a smooth surface would be the most important part.

He can sand it with #150 then #320 and paint it followed wit #600 between coats.

True, but if the painter doesn't know how to prep resin based surfaces, he shouldn't be painting....or at the least, not experimenting, especially anything of mine! LOL

No stripper! it will eat into it.
400 grit wet sand, keep it wet. Ready for primer "Steve! he's not sanding wood!"

150 on a DA sander is about right. Buzz off as much of the paint as you can. Painting on top of old paint results in too much film build that's prone to big chips.

Thanks for the info guys I figured chem strip was a no. I will sand away. I have only painted new parts in the past bumper covers door, handles, mirrors etc.. Any paint and primer suggestions for fiberglass ? If I take it down to the gel do I been an adhesion promotor?
