Backrest / Sissy bar fitment

Same question for 1982 KZ750 CSR sissy bar mounting brackets.
Or these 1981 (?) KZ750 ??? mounts.

Wow. Nobody huh? OK. How bout this, are there any KZ accessories prior to 1981 that will fit my bike? Or are the 81-82 ltd models bastard children with few adaptations with previous models?

I would ask the sellers for a bolt hole center-to-center measurement.
Of the two items linked above, the 750-CSR plates are probably going to be a closer match to a 1000 --- the 750-Twin frame is similar in size to the 1000s. The 81 plates are for a 750-4 which is a smaller bike, more akin to a 650 frame size.

Vintage K&G universal fit luggage racks & sissy bars can be found all over eebbaayy, being listed in all sorts of ways, usually depending upon what bike they were on. KZ, CB, GS, XS 550/650/750/850/900/1000/1100. Aschco is another brand --- their luggage racks look the same as the KG stuff.

I adapted a vintage luggage rack from a 350 Honda to fit my Z1. I had to cut the bushing off my old grab rail and weld it to the rack. There is a place to add a sissy bar but I wanted a top box. The one I ordered the advertised dimensions were wrong so it was too short. Had a big gap and it looked like SHT. Went down the the wrecking yard and got a head rest from a Nissan.

Nice job Steve looks real good. I will more than likely be fabricating some schtuff for a top case as well. I currently fabbed a bracket to hook up some hand me down willie max saddle bags for the old ST . Lookin good!

Put up a pic of your bike, maybe we can come up with some ideas.

Been thinking about fabbing something like this;





The bracket under the seat would be shaped differently but you get the idea. I'd keep the grab bar and utilize it for additional backrest support. I made a rough cardboard template and with a little creativity it is feasible. But as I said, the grab bar would have to help support the backrest up right keeping it from possibly bending the bracket down and riding on the fender.
It's something along those lines or fab some side brackets. To do that I'd like to keep the grab bar but haven't figured out a way to have both.

The grab bar does present a problem. Those brackets you were showing might work if they're long enough. Not much room there. My new grab bar is sitting on a shelf in the shed. Bought from Z1. No place for it to fit.

Your right about there not being much room there. I'm not going to buy one of those $170 dollar brackets. Even if it was long enough I'd still have to modify it including welding on some additional tabs for mounting into the fender mounting holes. I only posted pix of it to give the general design of what I considered fabricating.
I've looked at several different ways to fab something. The easiest would be side brackets. But at the price of removing the grab bar. A bracket based off that design wouldn't be that hard to make. Maybe I'll make another rough template but this time out of sheet metal. Meanwhile I'll stay on the hunt for one on ebay or cycle salvage yards.

I looked at a lot of head rests at the wrecking yard. The Volvo one was the sexiest but was the wrong color. They all had long bars coming out the bottom of different shapes. The one I have had 13mm solid chrome bars. it had a hollow square bracket welded to the bars. I didn't need them so I took them out, put in a block of wood, (the seam is Velcro'd closed) and screwed the new pad to the box from the inside. My new back rest cost me $5. You might pick up a pad like mine (all kinds of styles to choose from) and start from there.

I didn't really catch what you were saying about using a Volvo head rest in an earlier post. Do now and that's a pretty good idea. Like you said there's all kinds to choose from. It just has to be black.
