It looks like the distance from the top mounts to the tray is shorter than the kz1000 tail.... is that the case? Will the oz seat fit the z1 tail?

Never mind, I think it's an illusion from the pic angle :S
Having the tray is a big help too. I don't have one, so I can make a mold of one. I hope there aren't any stickers on there you want to save!

After really studying the tail, it will be more complex to make than I initially thought when I quoted an estimated cost earlier in the thread. It wouldn't be so bad if I deleted the tool tray, but I want the tool tray, so I'll make the molds to keep it. The extra work (and cost)is in making the parts for the tool tray and the rear mount, then assembling the tail in a secondary bonding proceedure. It's not as bad as the tank will be, but time consuming never the less.

Adam, that reminds me of a question. How do you plan on concealing the seam in the top of the tank? Are you just going to paint over it, or laminate a strip of carbon over the top of the seam after the tank is assembled and bonded together?

I was thinking about that too Josh. Is a tank thats just bonded together at a bunch of seams gonna be very strong? In my mind you could make it probably to half the required thickness and then bond it together, and put a bunch of layers on the outside. But then again, I know that just glue airplane halves together, so I geuss its ok.

That is an excellent question Josh, and one I'll be happy to answer. It seems that I have not made the construction of the tank clear. There is no seam on the top. The tank will be two main pieces, a top and a bottom, bonded along the stock seam location. The tank top mold will be in two pieces to get the part out once cured, but the mold halves are bolted together during lamination to form the single piece top. ;)

Thanks to member tiranglelaguna, who let me borrow a spare Z1 tail to mold from.

It's in good shape, and will only require a strip of the current paint, some primer filler and final sanding prep. This is going to be much different than the sidecover molds. When I get to this, I will make a quick mold of the tail, then make a glass reproduction. Then I plan to section the tail and stretch it 2". Then I'll cast a production mold from the fiberglass stretched tail to make a carbon fiber stretched Z1 tail. Thats the plan anyway
