Keys locked under seat.

Ok, ok I'm an idiot. Today when I was working on my KZ750B I used the keys to open the seat and then had to pull the side panel off. so I set the keys on the battery and totally forgot them there. A short time later I closed the seat without thinking where the keys were. Now they are locked under there and I can't think of how to get them out. Any ideas?? I tried everything and right now I'm down to just drilling out the lock. I can't think of any other way.

I dont know that model specific. You might be able to use one of those magnets on antena tools to grab the keys.

I tried to fish around in there with a magnet with no luck. Maybe I'll try the screwdriver persuasion.

Would it be feasible to remove (or loosen and partially remove) battery to afford better access through side cover area.

Or perhaps in a grassy area, with side covers removed, gently lay the bike down on its side so the keys might slide to a more accessible position. (Use the buddy system and a tarp.)

Is either seat pin accessible whereby removal would be possible using needle nose pliers?

Supposing you've already tried reaching in there with a bent wire attempting to snag the keys or push them to a more accessible spot.

Just some random thoughts. Good Luck! :)

Patton's idea of laying the bike over would be my first choice of things to try. I wouldn't drill or use a screwdriver or do anything to destroy the lock because when you have to replace it you are going to wind up with a key that doesn't match. If you can't get them out using Patton's tilt the bike method I'd just contact a locksmith with the key number and have them cut you a key. Might be around $20.00 or so but I'll bet you won't ever do that again.B)

I think Patton has the solution - pull the seat hinge pins. I just took a look at my KZ650C1 and it looks like that could be done with little difficulty. I doubt that the 750 hinge arrangement is much different. Ed

I know what I'd do. Go get my other key ring that I have duplicates on because I have done that with just about ALL my vehicles and KNOW I will do it again. Of course I would hit myself in the head with a large blunt object first. My dear old Pappy 's not around to do that anymore for me.

Seriously look at pulling the seat pins. GLuck!

Unfortunatly there is a "tab" on one of the 650's seat hinges (rear I think) which is designed to stop what you guys are trying to do! Don't know if this applies to L's bike though. Sorry...

P.S. If you lay bike over (good idea) lay it so keys go toward negative post, if you do it other way and key grounds out positive post your screwed as of course you can't get to it yet.

Keys are not magnetic, as most are made of brass. But the key ring should be.

Do not damage the lock as you'll be into more costs in replacing it and have a different key when replaced, as mentioned. Although it can possably be rekeyed to match.

Get the key code off a lock if possable, although I think Kawi stopped putting them on the front of the locks around '79~'80.
I could send you a key if you know the key code number.
