This problem has been resolved by joining my local tool library. I took out a corded Porter Cable 1/2” impact wrench. Three days struggle was over in under a minutes careful application. What an amazing resource.
I appreciate all your input. Sincere thanks. I am definitely not yet using the right penetrating oils and I will be on the lookout for the hex version of that axle. Meanwhile, it seems logical to grind flats on my existing one before reassembling.
Here’s where I am down to at the moment…
Next off, the harness and all the wire mounts and brackets. I’ll be cleaning all the connectors and touching up any rust spots. After that, I have to decide how deep I should go into the engine. I had only planned on checking the valve clearances and replacing the valve cover and oil pan gaskets.

02 Feb 2022 21:33Yep, that's what the hole is for..... does the oem tool kit have a bar or screwdriver bit that fits the axle hole? .

When cleaning electrical connectors, a dedicated product like Deoxit D5 will do wonders and make the job far less tedious. The D5 formula also leaves behind a very thin film of corrosion inhibitor that will keep the connections clean longer.

the hole is large. my oem tool kit doesn't have anything that fits. owner tools diagram doesn't show a bar, just 3 screwdriver bits. so I use a big long screwdriver.

I had a supply of Deoxit for 32 yrs.! It fell into my lunch pal at work sometimes! I worked on the docks! I retired 11 yrs. ago. Now I use WELLWORTH chemicals. A2Z is my go to for restorations. It even preserves my Parents bronze alloy grave marker.
Plus I started a fight awhile ago about WD40! I said it belongs in the Kitchen junk drawer! For the house person (PC correct)
Maybe the new, thicker version professional might be better? WD40 is water based 30-40%.

04 Feb 2022 17:15 - 04 Feb 2022 17:16Yep, that's what I use. I happen to have a large Philips head screw driver that is the exact diameter of the hole.
