Got a chance to dig in today. The left side was missing a seal. The speedo receiver was chewed up and the left side bearing was a disaster. Not sure if there's cause and effect there, and if so which way it goes. I managed to install new bearings but will hold off on putting the wheel back on until I get a new speedometer receiver.

Here's the gory video -

The speedo drive is supposed to have play. When you put it in the transfer assy, does it turn as you turn the drive

It does turn the drive. It's not so much the play that I'm concerned about, but the damage to the tangs of the receiver. If you look in the video I give the receiver a tap in a couple places to point out where the metal is sheared off or cut.

Looks like it was installed in the wrong position. It can be cleaned up and reused. The seal keeps it centered. The kit should have a new one.

Yeah? Well I'd certainly rather do that and be riding tomorrow than have to wait for the part.

The sealing surface still looks good. I guess all you can do is try it and see what happens. It was the other side that failed on me.

Yeah, the drive does move smoothly in the speedo housing once the seal is installed, and I imagine once the axle is tightened it will be in there securely. I'll give it a shot.

Ah, now I'm confused. The All Balls bearing kit came with three new seals. One clearly goes on the right side hub, the other goes in the speedo assembly. I don't see any place for the 3rd, largest seal. Doesn't look like there's a 3rd seal in the parts diagram either. Maybe it's relevant to other bikes that use the same bearings but not to mine...

Not the same bike but mine had only two as well. Might be meant to fit the range of bikes.

Not trying to hi-jack the thread, but I have a relevant question. When the axle nuts are tightened to spec and locked down with the clamps is there supposed to be any movement in the speedometer gear housing, or is it in fact locked down tight?
