Cable End Lube
12 Jan 2017 08:32 - 12 Jan 2017 08:35
The OEM 54001-1147 clutch cable has a thin plastic(?) sleeve on the lug that inserts in the hand-lever, which an aftermarket cable does not have.
If the cable end sleeve requires lubrication, what product is recommended?

I use Permatex ultra disk brake caliper grease on the ends & Liquid Wrench chain/cable lube on the inner cable. I already had both products. For the ends I figure the disk brake grease ought to be good, since it can stand up to use on the Fr brake. My thinking is that it's not supposed to attract dirt & grit and it should be fairly water proof.

You can buy an attachment for it but I use this. Carry it on the bike and use motor oil.

I bought this fancy little tool back in the early 70's to lube cables. Its so old it even has stamped in it "MADE IN USA" I use PJ1 black chain lube for clutch cables, and WD40 for throttle cables. Anything heavier when it gets cold the throttle does not snap back quickly. Less than 5 minutes and you are done!!!

I have one of those too, but it's early 1990s vintage. Not sure where it was made.
I recall reading that one should not use chain lube for cables as it becomes tacky after application (as a result of the anti-fling properties) but it seems to work for you. I've always used cable-specific lube - right now it's this:

Agree - I wouldn't recommend using chain lube inside cables. I use synthetic motor oil and it works fine as it never gets tacky. Ed

I've got the same tool as Dr. Gamma and had it about as long. They still sell them. I flush with WD-40 until it runs clean, followed by a cable specific lube (PJ1 I think). A can will last a lifetime. I also do a light coat of White Lithium grease on the exposed cable and end.

The little extra drag from using chain lube in my clutch cables does not really matter because I use clutch springs with considerable amounts of extra spring pressure!!!
Denco made some killer H/D clutch springs back in the day!!!!

Motion Pro has come out with a new version of their cable lube tool. I have not used it yet, but want to buy one.
