Here's a couple images showing the sleeve I was referring to. Notice how small the metal cable end is, but it is the correct size with the sleeve on it:

If you bought that cable as a direct factory replacement, either the cable on your bike was not factory original, or the one you purchased was not a factory replacement. That sleeve is there to match the clutch lever hole it fits in. Are there any numbers on the housing of either cable you have in your possession?
