magical self-sealing tire

Yeah, right.

But 3 days ago when I last rode my rear tire was fully inflated. Yesterday morning it was completely flat. I inflated it again this morning and it hasn't lost any pressure late tonight.

Umm, wtf? This is a new one for me in 30+ years of driving on tires. I've had slow leaks and I've had fast leaks but never a fast leak that stopped leaking.

On my wife's car it was a rim leak that was positional (depended on where the wheel was when it was parked). Drove me nuts, put a tube in it to fix it.

am I wrong to be afraid to ride on it? Because I am. Afraid that is. But 24 hours after inflation it hasn't lost a pound

Could have been grit in the schrader valve or it might be a fold in the tube. If it's a fold, you better replace the tube.

I've had this happen. In my case, I had a nail in the tire. It was a very slow leak unless I actually parked the bike with the nail touching the ground. I guess it only leaked when the tire was deflected from round. I plugged it with a Dynaplug.

Leaking valve stem also makes sense as a possibility.

Inspect it closely for nails, screws etc. Actuate the stem a few times to see if it sticks.

A flat tire is no joke at speed.

I've looked it over several times and can't find a thing. I tested the valve stem and it seems fine. Everything is fine except my confidence in it.

I wonder if that night it went flat in the garage is the same night I took Ambien for insomnia the first time. It was either that night or the night prior. Based on what I've read about it I might have walked down the stairs, into the garage, let all the air out of my tire, emailed all my ex-girlfriends and gone back to bed and never remembered any of it the next day. :)

+ 1,000 ! I had the valve stem rip off the tube at speed on my BSA in heavy traffic and POOOF - instant flat! I thought I was a dead man as the car directly behind kept blowing his horn at me while I struggled to maintain control. That nitwit thought I was deliberately doing some sort of stunts! Ed
