Which KZ has dual front rotors and... was created by I_Tig_in_piece
I'm in a slow process of gathering info then the required parts to do a dual disc front on my KZ. Just need some direction pointing (so I don't buy a bunch more stuff that won't get used) then I can take it from there
My bikes an 1980 KZ440a. Swapped out the mags for wires off a 400 and did all the necessary machining to the lower forks so I could use the 440. Which KZ model ran a dual disc in 18"? Thanks in advance once again :)

Z1R is the only dual disc 18" front i can think of.
bUT, wheel size does nothing for the rotors, just find rotors and calipers that bolt up to your wheels and forks and you should be good

my bikes; 80kz1000(project), 77 gl1000, 74 h2 (project)
Past; 78 kz1000, 83 kz550

I think this should work.

Get another 440 rotor and bolt it onto the RH side of the wheel.

Get a RH caliper p/n 43041-1025 from a 78-79 650C or a bunch of 77-80 1000s. Theres another RH caliper they used on some of these bikes (43041-033) thats very similar but you dont want that one. It uses different pads and pistons presumably because it goes with a solid rather than a drilled rotor. I've got a nice brand new set of pads that fits on the 43041-033 gathering dust that proves it pays to pay attention ;)

Get a master cylinder and a 4 way splitter again from a 78-79 650C or an assortment of 77-80 1000s

Thanks guys for all the suggestions, but I think I may have left the wrong impression after rereading my initial post?
I'm still using the 440 forks and caliper that required some machining done here and there, also fab'd some axle spacers to fit a kz400 wire wheel. Originally I thought the 400 hub had holes on the right side for another rotor, but it didnt  I'd put the holes myself, but theres not enough meat to drill and tap 4 holes that I'd be comfortable with.

Just drill the existing holes all the way through and through bolt them. My only concern would be the offset of the RH disk is correct for the caliper. The dual caliper setup from a 77-80 kz650/1000 will work I believe. It's funny that the RH fork leg has bosses for a caliper but as far as I know there never was a dual disk 440

That ideas has crossed my mind so I've been keeping an eye out for another 400 or 440 rotor (even though both have a different bolt pattern) and RH caliper. I'd have to get to the shop and have another look. I think I had the same idea but believe the problem was the mounting surface area not being flat due to the speedo gear. I'm not running the speedo so I'd have the clearance. I think I was lazy or absent minded to making a "hub centric" dealio for the new rotor?
Then the idea of full floating rotors and calipers from say an 98 or older Zx ninja (the model I found that seemed to have the smallest 5 bolt pattern on the hat) machine some brackets and offset spacers, make sure the calipers clear the spokes, run another steelbraid, fluid and bleed. Then practice NOT doing stoppies?hahaha. :P Think I'm just gonna stick to the factory rotors for now..

I wouldn't be shocked to learn that you could use a hub from all kinds of 75-80 ish 650/750/1000s that have 4 bolt rotors with holes on both sides and they just laced up to your rim using the 18" spokes.

They put bosses on both forks to hold calipers on practically everything throughout the seventies even bikes with drum brakes. My guess is manufacturing engineering was saving money on casting/machining/tooling. You couldn't just whip up a design in SolidEdge and send the file to a robot in them days ;)

That always puzzled me too.

Been there done that.
The 650 and up bikes are built up between the holes.
The 400/440"s are not as robust and have nothing between the holes.
Axle dia. is different also.

They left them off because too many people were customizing their bikes themselves. If you wanted these features, you had to pay FULL RIPPING RETAIL or buy a bigger bike.

ok so this is why I'm "NOT" gonna be able to use the wheel (kz400) I have now to add another rotor on the right.

The side I would like to add the rotor to.

Left side for comparison.

I do need to replace the the spokes front and back so now considering going disc out back as well after reading some horror stories of the rear lining falling apart from age degradation. So I got some researching to do..
